RFP = "Ride for Pie"
Why? Because pie fixes everything! And the bonus is ... I buy the pie! And give you free stickers!
Ken and I have been talking about doing this event for some time now .... The time has come to finally do it. Hopefully the weather will be great and the creeks will be just right in both depth and temperature.
~~~~~====***====~~~~~
Friday, June 8th - Camping at Meriwether Lewis Campground on the Natchez Trace. Map: https://goo.gl/maps/1NuEZ7CqfXA2 (https://goo.gl/maps/1NuEZ7CqfXA2). I'm bringing a lot of stuff (cooler, pop-up canopy, grill, firewood, etc.), so I'll be driving up with the bike on the trailer. Not sure yet what time I will be there, but hopefully early enough to secure a few campsites. Make your way to the campground whenever and however you want. There are lots of campsites there and plenty of trees if you want to hang your hammock. However, there are no showers at the campground, so you can either (a) bring a camp shower or (b) take a "ho bath" (phrase stolen from Ken) in the restrooms, which they do have.
Saturday, June 9th - Ride as much of the TN Dirt Devil as we can. Expect 200 miles of mostly smooth dirt roads with about 10-12 creek crossings. Depth of creek crossings will depend on rain that week, but usually they are not too challenging. Ken has ridden this area many times and knows the area well, so he has agreed to lead the ride and keep us off private land. Wear swim trunks under your riding pants, so you can cool off in the creek, if you want.
Sunday, June 10th - Leisurely coffee and breakfast, pack up, clean up, and go home.
Breakfast - We will be eating breakfast at the campsite, so plan to bring your own camp stove, coffee, dehydrated eggs, pre-cooked bacon, bran muffins, Cap'n Crunch, etc.
Lunch - The Dirt Devil area is not very populated, so do not expect a hot, sit-down lunch. We might be eating snacks at a gas station, but you should plan to bring snacks with you in a backpack or in your saddlebags. We might be eating lunch under a shade tree or sitting in a creek. Plan to bring a hydration pack full of water also.
Dinner/Supper - I intend to eat at the campground after I get a shower. The campsite is only 10 minutes from Hohenwald, so you have the option of eating in town, if you want. I will have pie in my cooler to share with everybody.
~~~~~====***====~~~~~
So dust off that camping gear and come on out! Let's get those bikes wet!

Following along for this one! Hopefully I can convince my wife that for safety reasons I need a shakedown ride and camp for Colorado!
Following with high hopes of making this trip. ;D
I should be back from North Carolina by then! A strong possibility I am!
Sometimes, depending on the number and length of stops along the route, it works out that we will be fairly near the Beacon Light Tea Room near Bon Aqua around lunchtime.
http://beaconlighttearoom.com/history.htm
It's not the only place around but it's a durn good one. Diverting for a hot lunch can be a group decision.
P.S. They have pie too.
The route covers some areas that are very prone to flood damage and/or erosion. There's always another way around but a u-turn or two may be required.
I will do my best to do a pre-ride beforehand...but work is nutty right now so no guarantee.
There are horse and buggy clubs that ride parts of this area. Some period of quiet courtesy may be required for the health and safety of the riders if we run into a horse ride.
It's a lot of fun, a lot of water, and fantastic country scenery. Hope to see y'all there!
You can skip around this video for a preview. It's from a fairly dry period in 2014:

From what I have read/heard, you can do this route on almost any motorcycle, but you probably want to have dual sport tires installed.
It's big bike friendly, and you will want waterproof boots. There at are a few watercrossings.
Just got a pair of Forma Terra's. Hope to break them in so I can shift the klr.
I also have the Terras! Mine felt pre-broken-in straight out of the box! So Comfortable!
I've made a terrible scheduling mistake and I apologize. :-[ The Warden and I will be floating around the Atlantic on Memorial Day weekend.
I've spoken with Glenn and believe he's going to try to choose another weekend. Stay tuned...and sorry again.
How do y'all feel about Jun. 8-10?
That is my birthday weekend and also the Perry Mountain 24hr!
I may be able to sell the whole birthday ride idea to the wife! Since we are getting OLD now the birthdays don't seem as important!

Your's may not, but hers does.....no matter what she says. :)
A gentleman always remembers a lady's birthday, but not her age.
Truer words have never been spoken.
Okay, date has been changed to June 8-10. I may try to go up Thursday night just to secure at least one campsite.
If I don't have a wedding to go to that weekend, can't remember when it is, I'll be there. Thinking about getting rid of the DR350 and getting a DRZ or maybe a 350exc. This would make for a fun ride with a new bike.
7 hour drive but I'll come if I can get someone else down here interested.

It's a dang nice area for good ole country riding even on the blacktop. It's a nice camp too...just no showers. Come on up and sit a spell. Not far from the famous Loveless Cafe. Everybody needs a good ho-bath in a sink every now and then.

I believe so ... my understanding is that it is all dirt roads and a bunch of shallow water crossings. I'll probably do a pre-ride sometime Memorial Day weekend.
I don't know if I can make this one or not so don't count me in yet.
Will there be gas stops on the way? I'm sure my WR won't make it 200 miles on a tank!

Correct. It's about the same as the last Tellico ride we did together but with more water.....and dang nice scenery.

Cool! Just a skip and a jump from Crockett. That TW will be a blast in all those creeks.
Yeah I hope so. My spouse rules by the way. She said why don't I bring my tent and camp out Friday at Maywether? so I may do that and show up Friday. Either way it will be a good time.
I am a definite , maybe, possible trailer over Friday How deep da water ? I have a Dr350 with side open air box mod ..could order a new cover I guess :)

Hopefully not that deep. We will re-route for anything overly treacherous. Fast water at air box height likely qualifies as treacherous.
Ken is leading this ride, but I plan to do a little pre-riding/exploring over Memorial Day Weekend.
Pre-ride leg 1 will look something like this: https://goo.gl/maps/Gttob2TuovE2 (https://goo.gl/maps/Gttob2TuovE2)

Also planning to check out Fall Hollow campground on the pre-ride. It's only seven miles from Meriweather campground, and you have to pay to camp, but they have hot showers and a restaurant...
For creek difficulty reference, here's some vids from a ride I did last year in the area.
The deepest one (where the XR got dumped in the first video) was probably 8" - 10" at the most.
I was going to stay at fall hollow this spring on the TN. Dual sport ride but did not go due to bad weather. I do not know the area but it sounded nice.
Looks like my collateral has been accepted and verbal approval to attend this ride has been granted!
My plan will be to ride up from the Birmingham area Friday afternoon unless something comes up and I have to trailer up later in the evening!
My birthday is the 9th so I will be expecting gifts and cake!
Thanks

That's a great plan, but we're heading out on Tuesday for Land Between the Lakes, then Mark Twain National Forest on Wednesday night, Ozark National Forest on Thursday, before heading back east to Tennessee for Friday and Saturday nights......
At least that's the plan for now.

We're definitely a maybe. Depends on if we get hit hard with storm work after the tropical storm moves through. We may end up working. If not we are going to trailer up there Friday evening. Hopefully well get to,the campsite before 11 pm.

I would like to leave by 10:30 am for a 2 hr ride to Chef Troy's Talk of the Town in Houston for a delicious lunch. Plan to stop shortly after lunch in Moulton for gas and restrooms.
I currently have us routing through the NATRA property for a little bit of gravel. We can modify this plan when we get to the area if we are just ready to get to camp.
This should put us arriving at camp by 5pm which would leave time to set up and run to Hohenwald for supplies if needed (cold beer)!
I can create a separate ride if we need to discuss more details or just PM me!
Really excited for this one!
I'm dirtbike-less at the moment, but I may meet up and ride to lunch on the Versys.

Well...I've got a couple of dirtbikes, they're just both T.U. right now. :)
My 450 is at the dealer awaiting tear down. Will need a new cylinder/piston at the least, complete top/bottom rebuild at the worst.
The 200 is in better shape...stripped head bolt and leaking coolant. Hopefully just needs a Helicoil and head o-rings.

We'll keep everybody together... waiting at turns and such. Also, it's not going to be a high-speed ride. We're going to enjoy the scenery, help people through the creek crossings (if they need it), and generally have a relaxing day.
In case I confused anybody by talking about the other campground, let me clear it up...
- We are camping at Meriwether Lewis campground on the Natchez Trace. I will try to get close to the bathhouse at {35.524817, -87.455400}.
- The ride will start from the campground at 9:00am. The late start is to accommodate people who may not be able to camp Friday night.
- The first gas station will be Plowboys, which is 34 miles from the campground. Route: https://goo.gl/maps/fjfVcWJ9u3A2 (https://goo.gl/maps/fjfVcWJ9u3A2)
- From the gas station, it is about seven miles to the start of the Dirt Devil, where Ken will take over. I will ride sweep to make sure that we don't lose anybody.
There are some other waypoints in the attached file, e.g., gas at {35.913617, -87.331283}. If you have a Garmin, it should be easy to load the attached route and waypoints.

...anyone have a good way to strap a handle of bourbon to the bike?
Easiest way? Carry it internally...

We are having a blast. Somebody dropped their bike in the creek, it flooded with water, we disassembled it and flipped it over, caused a roadside injury, fixed the bike, and still made it to lunch on time!

To answer the one question burning in everyone's mind, a 21 inch tube in an 18 inch tire will last exactly till 3 miles from home!!
Limped it a couple miles down I-65 and got a few funny looks from neighbors but I made it home!!
Great ride and thanks to all those who contributed and participated! Photos and videos to come soon!
Thanks Ken and Glenn for organizing a great weekend camping and riding. The pie was good too! Many thanks to all that lent a hand drying out the DR after it went for a swim.
A few pictures from the weekend.

I feel bad now, knowing you had to inflate that time with a hand pump. I didn't feel bad while I was waiting in the shade at the gas station though.
@springer you really missed out man.... this ride was tailored perfectly to fit what you need!
A nice guy in a truck stopped by and let me use his full sized bike pump! That was very nice of him!

I was going to ask where you carried that big pump. I didn't see any luggage that would hold it.
I started the day with a 12V pump that failed on me. It's given me trouble free service for about 8 years up until Saturday. It's been all over the country with me, Canada and Ecuador too. I've used it to air up many of tires out in the middle of the woods. It's final resting place is the garbage can at Nick & Bubba's Beer N Bait Gas Station in Hohenwald, TN. It deserved better than that. I'm kinda sad now.
Last night I ordered an identical pump to replace it. The Slime 40001 Power sport Tire Inflator with SAE (Battery Tender) connector. I hope this one is as good to me as its predecessor was.
