SECOND ANNUAL --- TENNESSEE DIRT DEVIL RIDE & CAMP!!!Friday, June 21st - Set up camp at Meriwether Lewis Campground on the Natchez Trace. Map:
https://goo.gl/maps/Kp9qMoVtKwP2 (https://goo.gl/maps/Kp9qMoVtKwP2). Make your way to the campground whenever and however you want. I'll try to drive up the day before and get the campsite that I want (Site 27?) at the end of the loop. There are lots of campsites and plenty of trees if you want to hang your hammock. However, there are no showers at the campground, so you can either (a) bring a camp shower or (b) take a "ho bath" in the restrooms, which they do have. I'm bringing a lot of stuff (cooler, pop-up canopy, grill, firewood, etc.), so I'll be driving up with the bike on the trailer.
Saturday, June 22nd - Ride 166 miles of TN Dirt Devil. Mostly smooth dirt roads (some not so smooth and unfortunately, some pavement) with 20-25 creek crossings. Depth of creek crossings will depend on rain that week, but usually they are not too challenging. We will stay on public roads and avoid private property. Lunch will be at the Beacon Light Tea Room. Link:
https://beaconlightrestaurant.com/ (https://beaconlightrestaurant.com/). Wear swim trunks under your riding pants, so you can cool off in the creek! Back at the campground, there will surely be plenty of entertainment and lively conversation.
Proposed Route is 166 miles (counter-clockwise, tracks attached, map below):
- Leg A - 56 miles to gas station
- Leg B - 38 miles to lunch & gas station
- Leg C - 31 miles to waterfall and cooling off in the creek
- Leg D - 41 miles back to Hohenwald and campground
Faster pace this year!Sunday, June 23rd - Leisurely coffee and breakfast, pack up, clean up, and go home.
~~~~~====***====~~~~~
Important Notes:
- KSU at 8:00am Saturday!. We've got a lot of ground to cover in the morning, so be ready!
- We are not going to a gas station first, so if you need gas, please fill up Friday afternoon/evening.
- It will likely be hot & humid, so please wear a hydration pack with 2-3 liters of water.
- We will likely encounter several horses & buggies ... slow to minimum speed and be as quiet as possible as you pass.
- Watch for dogs and other animals.
- Bring your own camp food, camp stove, dehydrated eggs, instant coffee, tuna packs, crackers, Count Chocula, etc.
- No organized breakfast or dinner plans, but Hohenwald is only 10 minutes away from the campground, if you prefer not to eat camp food.
~~~~~====***====~~~~~
Hopefully the weather will be great and the creeks will be just right in both depth and temperature, so dust off that camping gear and come on out! Let's get those bikes wet!

Yeah, you can't buy memories like that though. 👍
Birthday weekend again for me this year! I hope the wife likes the easy gift of free time!!
I hope to make it!
It's on the calandar. I hope I can make it again. Last year was a lot of fun. Maybe it won't be a 120F this time and we can finish the loop
I know I'm not the only one craving those biscuits with preserves at the lunch stop. Holy crap that was good. I might even enjoy a big ol' glass of milk with @kyle Peterson.
I should be able to make this one!
Mmmmm biscuits and preserves!
Will someone bring a tv so we can watch the pterodactyl video?
I will be going. It was allot of fun last year.

Change of plans...I might be able to make this. Mandatory work conference that week out of town. Depends on how early I can get back home Friday night if I'll be able to make it up there Saturday morning.
I'm in.
Don't forget about this one folks. This is a great weekend of riding and camping. Be sure to respond so Nice Goat has an accurate head count.
Glenn, I plan to get there fairly early Friday. I'll already be in Manchester, TN the night before.
I'm out. I would love to go, had a great time on last year's ride. But work demands dictate otherwise. Perhaps next year!
This looks like a lot of fun but for the second year in a row I have family obligations that day. :(
I will make it again this year, great time last year.
Rich
It is on my scheduled list of things not to miss. ;) Got my money somewhat straight, pulling a maintenance day on my bike this Wednesday or Thursday and will be ordering a new set of shoes for the fat pig! Baring a meeting with a mule on a foggy hill top road, I will be there! :D
@2372ighost You down for a speed limit +5mph or so up there?
@Mike Hudson may be down!
@Fencejumper09, that sounds like a plan.
Rich
I'm putting this one on the calendar. It has been too long since the DRZ has been out of my yard.
Is anyone interested in riding single track at NATRA in Westpoint, TN for a few hours Friday on the way up? It can be as easy or hard as the group wants.
You must be a member of NATRA before arriving. See website for details
https://natra.clubexpress.com
I started a ride thread. Don't pollute this one with NATRA stuff.

2 and 1/2 weeks out...
Updates in the first post, along with GPX files. Limit of four file attachments, so the waypoints are in this post.
This is going to be a great ride.
This is gonna be an awesome ride!
Okay, lessons learned from the pre-ride yesterday.....
- This is a fantastic route that we have planned. The morning is classic TNDD from the official map, and the afternoon is the best of Ken's Hickman Loop.
- Probably 85% of the route has some shade over the road. Lots of cool vistas, old farms, old houses, etc., and ... water!
- Most of the creek crossings are just like last year, i.e., no surprises.
- We are going counter-clockwise this year, so the swim hole is different — shallower but the water is crystal clear.
It's a long route, so we have to get moving early and keep moving, at least until lunch. For this reason, I backed up the start time to 8:00am. We can take a more leisurely pace after lunch.
I have a reservation for a group of 20 at the Beacon Light Restaurant for 12:00pm. We need to leave Meriweather campground at 8:00am. Please have enough fuel to go 60 miles to the first gas stop.
I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be a great ride and camp weekend!
I imported tracks and waypoints into Locus Map for Android and everything works and looks just fine.
Now to decide if I run my worn out tires for one more ride or change them now. One of life's toughest decisions.

All the creek crossings are clear and cold (and refreshing!). There's only a short section that has a couple of monster mudholes... that is where your quest will take you. :)
I'll add a few previews as I get them downloaded.
(Sorry for the poor audio/video quality...I need to adjust the exposure setting and figure out another mounting point to avoid the excessive wind noise)
Just ordered replacement mirrors for the 690 since I think Kyle broke mine in north Georgia!
Wife gave me approval as this is my Birthday Weekend! Somebody better bring me a freaking cake this year!!!
I cried all the way home last year until Melony bought me a slice of Mexican Cheesecake from Chef Troy's!!
trackmaster2: I don't know if i'll live long enough for that ride
me: i'll be gentle
trackmaster2: really ? just a fun day of cruising dirt roads ?
me: heheheheheehheehehehahahahahahhHAHAHAHAHAHA. no. you're going to die.
trackmaster2: mommy
thank you for the gpx files Glenn !
I'm going to slap on mills/marks/mulleys/etc old super tanker taboo this evening and check for leaks. i won't be running out of fuel, i think !
I'm in for sure. Not sure if Ill truck it or ride up,but I should be there midday Friday!
Hey
@Nice Goat any chance we can convince you with greenbacks, brown water or beer to bring that nifty shower setup again?
That definitely increased my comfort level around the fire Saturday night and the ride home on Sunday!

I'm glad your Amazon wish list wasn't embarrassing.
Melony and I had a great time at this ride last year, unfortunately Nucor Steel thinks I need to be there instead of riding this year.
Y'all have fun, ride safe, enjoy......see y'all soon.

Honestly, I did not think that at all. That was your friend Fencejumper...
is anyone planning to be at camp to babysit our stuff all weekend ? i would really like to bring two bikes, but more importantly i kind of want to bring them both home with me again too !
I was wondering the same thing. Then again the only thieves I know of from last year was squirrels.

Now that

Have y'all seen the weather?
@Nice Goat, I have a 12v Shower (the Big Kahuna) if you want to borrow it to go with your shower tent??? You can boil a little water to add to tepid water and have a nice, warm shower.

:D They arecalled wearher people now...and they are called that because they have no idea whether it is going to rain or not.
Just remember,
Mud is fun. You can play slip and slide in it. If you cover yourself in it, no one knows who you are. If you crash, for me it is when I crash, it is softer
I am going rain or shine. Already took off work.
Been watching the weather...they are calling for almost 3" of rain in Hohenwald area this weekend. That'll put a real damper on my ability to have fun.
I don't want to compete with Father's Day next weekend, so... What do y'all think about moving the ride out two weeks to the weekend of June 21-23?
I could probably do that weekend but I'm game for whatever y'all decide. It doesn't look too good for this weekend I agree.

any weekend works for me. I dont mind rain if I get caught in it, but 3+ inches and camping in it sucks.....

Right now the proposed dates work for me.
Unfortunate FYI-guy here.
The lower areas in Hickman county (which is where all the fun creek crossings are) are susceptible to flooding....2010 ring a bell??

Not wanting to be an alarmist....but I've been reoriented in far less fast water.
We're going to postpone this ride for two weeks and try again on 6/21-6/22.
Sorry folks...
It is, what it is. Unfortunately. 😩
now that's it's postponed, there will probably be 1/4" of rain and the FREE money trees that line the roads will be shedding $1000 bills.
or bbq and naked women everywhere.
or worse, pie !
In that part of the country I'd be wary of the bbq, and maybe the nekkid women!

The forecast has dropped from 2.8" to 1.9" ... I love how the weather looks so glorious as soon as the weekend is over. Just my luck.

Thousand dollar bills are worse than grass clippings in the road.
I may ride up there tomorrow and just see what the spotty storms did to the lowlands for future....<edit> So far, never mind.
Rode up to Bon Aqua....got some zippy-mart lunch...heading home. Haven't seen much more than a couple showers and a few wet spost.
Normally, there's not a creek in my front yard. About 30 minutes after I got home:
So, who knows what all happened up there???
Well, we went with the forecast. Even though we call them "weather guessers," their guesses are usually better than mine.
Six days!
I took a vacation day this coming Friday, so I'll definitely be there early. Planning to leave the house about 6:00am and be there at the campground about 8:00am. I'll set up a tent, a hammock, and an easy up and then go riding and check out our swimming hole.

nice!
fork seals/bushings and some other stuff just to be sure... can't wait!
With the change of dates, I'm unable to make it Friday night :'( I might be able to get there early Saturday morning for the day ride.
cheers, here's to dust prevention and full cool creek crossings !!!
Change #36 for me. I'm having to leave the airplane in White Plains NY Friday night. I won't be able to commercial home til Saturday. (An all day ordeal) so I'm going to miss this absolutely great ride with great folks. :-[
Forecast is light scattered showers and 92 degrees. It's gonna be a steamer! Start drinking water today!
Weather forecast is improving by the minute! Who's coming out to play this weekend?
meeeeeeee
I am in!
Unless I do something stupid tonight and break my bike while bleeding the brakes!
Wish me luck!
I'm planning to attend but need electric hookup or run Honda generator.
Should I try one of the nearby campgrounds or do you think there will be room to spread out?
@custmmc Plenty of space near the restroom (not too close that you would smell it) that are more spread out where you wouldn't bother anyone with a generator!
I will drive the truck with slide - in camper, pulling an enclosed trailer. I can come through Bham if anyone needs something transported. Plan to leave from Oxford early Friday, pending filter and tie change.
Suzi is loaded and Whitey is ready to roll. might have some door paint left when we arrive, might not.

booooo !
i had a icepack on my toes (ongoing nerve damage from dirty biking crashes all the time) yesterday to get ready for this weekend ;-)
you'll be missed, we'll have to roost somebody else now !
We finally made it to lunch at 1:30! We started late, had two mechanical stops, had to get around a downed tree, and three stops for flooded bikes! It has been an adventure, and we still have 65 miles to go!
Thanks to all of you for letting me come along. I really enjoyed the day. First time in years I've been out on a dirt bike for 11 hours, I need a softer seat or a harder butt.
Dirt Devil videos to come,
Ken
Glad you came out Ken!
My Seat Concepts didn't help much...my thutts (the part where your thigh and butt meet) were screaming for mercy about 3/4's of the way through yesterday.
I took some "Hero" shots at a water crossing playground...
@Mulley
Glenn on his 500...
@Nice Goat
David on his 690, getting a shower from Mike on his 500...
@Fencejumper09
Tony on the CRF250L...
@TFancher
Jeff on his 350EXC...
@Jwwr
Michael on the Husky 650...
@Beck
Those are great. Hate I missed it all.
Glenn and I arrived on Friday and secured the camping spots.
We then set out for lunch in Hohenwald at the Junkyard Dog steakhouse and did a short recon of a couple of locations for the next day's ride...
Finally...lunch at the Beacon Light Tea Room.
Bring a hearty appetite, the portions are huge. And of course, Glenn sprung for pie...
(forgot to get a pic of the pie)
I pulled a couple of screen shots from my videos.
Ken
A couple more.
Some More
Sorry, one more
Thanks Glenn for organizing another awesome Ride For Pie! Everything seemed to come together for what was close to the perfect ride ! No dust, not too hot, great food and a great group , No major breakdowns or injuries. Spectacular weekend !
Thanks Glenn! I really enjoyed it!
thanks Glenn and Kevin for putting all this together for us to enjoy !
just so everyone knows, they took the time to triple check all the routes, pre rode them, noted interesting places to stop n sit, had reservations for food, checked on gas stops, and a while lot more. neither one of these guys are the type to toot their own horn, so you'll never hear it from them, but a lot of work went into this ride.
also, they didn't hear it, but at several of the stops the guys all said the same thing... "man this is awesome, they have everything planned out and made it super easy to have fun for us!" you even got props from Mike Monroe about how well organized every thing was, several times. if you don't know who he is, just trust us, when you impress guys that run isde/Baja trips, you're doing it right !
i has a blast, really enjoyed all the play time with these great guys. can't say enough good things about it.
and the pie.... omg you need to experience this coconut goodness... I'm still in #headspin mode !
ps- if you're looking for on-location video production/editing it would appear that Kevin's video editing skills took an enormous leap forward recently... we were still dripping from the stream crossings and he was already uploading !
I won't take any credit...all I did was tag along with Glenn for the pre-ride and actual ride. As usual, he handles all the details and planning superbly.
As for video, I just found a feature recently on my S8 I got about six months ago. It will do slo-mo and super slo-mo vids and even does some of the editing for you. Probably old news to some, but I just came from an S3 phone so this is space-age stuff for me.
All my videos loaded up from Glenn's Dirt Devil ride. They are short and unedited. They are in order of the direction we rode. I included the rode name in the title so everyone could a get a general idea of where we were on the route. If any of you see anything that should edited out let me know.
