Plan on posting all my mods n stuff that I do to my 2017 Africa Twin here.
I have all ready installed the AltRider skid plate, centerstand skid plate, and lower crash bars.
The radiator guards that come on the Twin are just plastic so a rock, a stick, or anything else hitting the radiator could cause a really bad day. So I installed a set of the AltRider aluminum guards. They fit over the plastic guards that come from the factory.
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20170812_161942_zpsjl1px7sp.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20170812_161942_zpsjl1px7sp.jpg.html)
That took longer than I planned due to the fact than when you remove the factory bolts the radiators slip down a bit. They are a real pain to line back up. :-X
Next up was doing something to the front fender. It sits way to low and way to close to the front tire as you can see in the pictures;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20170812_161952_zpsav1inlio.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20170812_161952_zpsav1inlio.jpg.html)

AltRider makes a kit that raises the fender about an inch.

Now I should be able to fit a set of nobbies on the rear AND the front. ;)

The factory skid plate is small and made out of really thin aluminum.

The factory tires that came with the bike are about gone. A set of nobbies will be next. ;)
Those are looking like some great mods for longevity!
Can't wait to ride with you off-road!!

Don't know if you can call it riding with me or not. I spend what feels like most of my time picking my bike back up off the ground. ;) The other day I picked it up only to dump it on the other side. :D
Wanted to "even out" the dirt on both sides..........yea, that was it. ;D ;D
Sounds like it will be a good ride to bring the GoPro!! ;D

You could title it the "I pick things up, I put them down" video. :)
A mod to protects the levers and stuff on the bars;

The stock stuff was just plastic deflectors. The BarkBusters are a little more "drop worthy". ;)
When is the dirt ride?
Okay, back on subject...........
First casualty of my "riding style" "drops a lot". :)
Dropped it only once yesterday but it was a hard drop. Going around a corner full of loose dirt-n-rocks.

The plastic hard Honda cases survived a bunch of drops in mud but the first drop in hard dirt.......not so much.
Lesson learned? Ether buy aluminum side bags, or tough soft side bags or learn not to drop your damn bike. ???
I think I will go with option 1. or option 2...................I haven't figured out how to do option 3 in 43 years of riding.........so I sorta doubt I will figure that out in the years I have left. :P
A couple thoughts on bags...
If you are just riding dirt locally, ditch the bags and use a tank bag and a tail bag to carry anything you might need.
If you are planning an overnight, use soft bags.
Use the hard bags for commuting to work, grocery shopping, around town stuff.
I have hard bags for my GS, if you have to put a foot down (dab) you can get your leg between the bag and ground and break an ankle, lower leg, etc.
I use a set of soft bags if I am camping and doing off road, I use the hard bags for shopping, and riding to tellico plains, then remove them to ride trails.
Good advice but..... ;) I drop the damn thing SO much the bags;
1. Help protect the bike. :)
2. Help me to lift the damn thing on the 3rd, fourth, fifth, etc drop. ;D
Remember, I do not do dirt rides..........I do " I drop it and I pick it up" rides.
Finally the bike is "nobbielishis". ;)

Today's mods to the bike...new foot pegs! :DANCING-banana-032:
The stock foot pegs came with rubber inserts that I quickly removed. That left the grippiy part, that was good. My feet wouldn't slide off if the pegs or my boots got some mud on them. The problem was when I stood-up on the pegs. The stock ones are to narrow for my taste.
Stock foot pegs;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20170921_171016_zpsmwfj8fsd.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20170921_171016_zpsmwfj8fsd.jpg.html)
I have heard about Pivitpegs from YouTube videos. Then I saw that Yamahammer put a set on the Tenere he bought. He likes them so that is good enough for me. :respect-048: I bought a set. The picture below shows how much wider they are than stock;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20170921_170954_zps1lb9d6go.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20170921_170954_zps1lb9d6go.jpg.html)
Swapping the stock pegs for the Pivitpegs was pretty simple. Remove the stock cotter pin from the pivit thingy, drive the pivit thingy out from the stock pegs, replace with the Pivitpeg reusing the stock spring, and use the provided cottor pin from the Pivitpegs kit.
Picture of the Pivitpegs installed on the Africa Twin;

Feels better standing on the bike now. We will see how they feel when riding when I install my rear tire tomorrow.
Man that thing is looking good.
How do you like those tires.
I like the design but they don't make them to fit anything I have.

Like them so far. I dropped the air to 20# PSI front and rear to give a little help in traction. As soon as I can find a bead-lock to fit the odd sized rear rim, I will drill the rim to fit it. I would like to drop the rear to around 10# PSI for better traction.
What I would REALLY like would be a Tubeless system to fit the rear rim. They make one to fit the front rim and I plan to install it this winter sometime.
The Tubeless system holds the tire with a smaller high pressure inner tube that grips the tire 360 degrees and separates the tire into 2 sections. A high pressure (100 psi) section then an outer section (with out an inner tube) that to can take down to 10 pis or less.
The advantages I see are;
1. The high pressure tube holds the tire in place AND seals off the spokes so there is no leaks from the outer portion of the tire.
2. The outer portion of the tire can be easily plugged just like a tubeless automobile tire.
I have ridden a couple of dirtbikes/dualsports with this system...AMAZING grip in the slippery stuff. :respect-048:
I have messed with both systems. Never run anything but a rim lock.
I would be a little hesitant to run either on a street bike. They both can make a wheel very hard to balance. Though the thought of having either on my GS at times sounds very tempting.
Back tire on. :respect-048: Took it for a spin and everything feels good. Tried out the new pegs while I was at it. VERY comfortable to stand up on. Liking the pivot feature. Makes shifting the bike and using the rear brake a little easier. :respect-048:
Okay over the past...well week I have been adding some stuff to the Africa Twin. First thing I did was to install a set of Honda heated grips. Went with the Honda grips because;
1. They have fixed the issue of the grips not getting hot enough.
2. The factory wiring harness and dash is set-up for them.
3. Never had heated grips before so... :D
Let me first just say that if you buy a NEW Africa Twin, have the dealer install them as part of the purchases. You will have to take the front faring apart to do the install. So save yourself that grief. :D Oh, and buy a Honda dealer Service Manual you decide not to let the dealer install the grips...or anything else.
What the Twin looks like after stripping the outer fairing off;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20171028_132656_zpsgvc4nqog.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20171028_132656_zpsgvc4nqog.jpg.html)
So after much frustration, cussing, and questioning my sanity, I got them on.

After that I started on the High Fender kit that I won! Yep, won it from Rocky Mountain M.C.! ;D
One of the things you have to do first is install the new brake line that is included in the kit. This is the brake line that crosses over from the left brake caliper to the right one. This is longer than stock because it goes up and over the new high fender.
Okay, did that, now you install the little brace thingy that installs on the bottom triple clamp.
Okay done! Now install the fender...and my first problem appeared. You see I had already installed an AltRider headlight guard.
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20171211_124700_zpsx1k57tey.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20171211_124700_zpsx1k57tey.jpg.html)
Well after installing the fender, I took it for a ride and found the forks didn't want to turn. WTF? I found the new high fender was being held up by the Headlight guard...CRAP! What to do now? Well I made some 25mm spacers to go between the fender and the new little brace thing the fender mounts to;

No problems now, so I FINALLY took it for a ride!
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20171211_113543_zpsnpffx5hx.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20171211_113543_zpsnpffx5hx.jpg.html)
Other than dropping and picking up my bike the usual 10 times, everything went perfect. ;)
Someone needs to make a No dropping your bike kit...I would gladly BUY one of those. :D
I think that kit can be earned at a dirt gymkhana event! That AT is looking sweet!!
One thing I did notice about that high fender. It does block alot of the wind that use to come up through the fairing and forks. ;)

Yep, gotta be earned and not bought!
Okay I have done a bit more to the Twin. The Africa Twin comes with a little tool box thingy on the left side. There is a couple of problems with this;
1. Honda puts NO tools in this little box thingy.
2. You NEED a tool to get TO the tool box. (Allen wrench)
3. You have to remove the tool-less tool box to get to the battery.
Well considering all this /\ plus the fact I like having a battery tender hook-up (An added plus, it can also be used to run heated gear) I decided to turn my useless tool-box into something that will serve a purpose. ;)
So, off came the tool-box, then a 1 inch hole was drilled, (25mm for you metric fellas) and this plug was mounted;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/DSCF0004_zpslv4q12r5.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/DSCF0004_zpslv4q12r5.jpg.html)
It has a little cover thingy that hopefully keep most of the water out the next time I drop it in water. :D
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/DSCF0005_zpsd5xs88rc.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/DSCF0005_zpsd5xs88rc.jpg.html)
Next a hole was drilled/hacked into the plastic cover over the battery compartment.
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/DSCF0006_zpsmxdvszee.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/DSCF0006_zpsmxdvszee.jpg.html)
After connecting the flush mount plug to the battery tender plug I then replaced the little 3 amp fuse in the Battery tender plug with a 25 amp fuse. So now I can use the same flush mount plug to keep the battery charged AND run my heated gear. (Confused? I know I am and I just wrote that f#cked up sentence. :-X )
I then used some rubber grommet thingys to help seal the holes I hacked to get the battery tender plug through.
Here is the finished product;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/DSCF0007_zpsykqqqyij.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/DSCF0007_zpsykqqqyij.jpg.html)
Next up fairing protection...
Okay, here we go. ;)
First up, making the little tail thingy into something a bit more useful. Install a rear rack plate from Tusk;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20180118_150711_zpsbvi2yjpn.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20180118_150711_zpsbvi2yjpn.jpg.html)
Install was easy peasy, cheesy weasy. It comes with 4 spacers, 4 bolts, and 4 nuts. Installs over the factory rear thingy that you can not strap anything to. 15 minute install.
Next up, AltRider upper crash bars and the side bars that connect the upper and lower crash bars.
Side view;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20180118_150758_zpsjjl8scku.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20180118_150758_zpsjjl8scku.jpg.html)
Front view;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20180118_150806_zpst1w366az.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20180118_150806_zpst1w366az.jpg.html)
Other side view;
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee446/owenwoolley/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20180118_150813_zps4j8t8x2m.jpg) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/owenwoolley/media/Honda%20Afican%20Twin/20180118_150813_zps4j8t8x2m.jpg.html)
You might not notice but the bars are pretty well made and mounted. They attach to the frame of the bike in two places plus with the addition of the middle bar, they are mounted to the lower crash bar too. The lower crash bar is 1 1/4 inch, the middle and upper bars 1 inch. I don't think they will bend anywhere...even with me riding/crashing it. :D
Okay next on the list, a set of mirrors that will hopefully hold up better than the stock ones. (The right stock one cracked do to the bike taking yet another dirt nap ;) )
Doubletake;

And last but not lestest, a tailbag. Wolfmman makes some good stuff they do;

Now let me ask a question of y'all. I have decided to add these 2 wrenches to my tool bag. Made by Channel-lock, they open up to 1 1/2 inches. I am thinking they will just about cover my needs for a wrench out in the woods;

What do y'all think?
BTW, those are 6 inch adjustable...they open up as far as the 12 inch adjustable's i have.
Who cares about the wrenches

Yea, I have been known to Farkleout a bike or two in my time. :D
Any new farkles recently? How are the Mitas holding up?
I'll be spooling up the aftermarket soon for mine and creating a smoking crater in my bank account.

I'm running the Mitas Dakar on my Tenere and really like it so far. Quiet on the road and descent traction off road.
I'm only running the rear and a conti up front.

Got the MEFO Super Explorers on now. The Mitas lasted 3500-4000 miles. @ around 2k miles, I swapped the tread around to get a better bite again. ;)
Some pics of my AT. Some upgrades/improvements/farkles. ;D
Some sporty levers, Barkbusters, Wolfman bags, tires, dust, etc... :D

Plus it will give you a chance to get a recent picture of your bike in the mud...that one is more than a few years old. :D
Serious mud. My KLX650 experienced that in Panama (1997). No fun.
