Title: Spring Maintenance Day & BBQ - April 7th
Post by: bblass on March 07, 2018, 04:36:36 PM
BBQ & Garage Party - Noon on April 7th at TWO-3-SEVEN Allen Ave, Homewood, AL 35209. Last house on the left with plenty of bike parking in the rear. We'll be there all afternoon so feel free to drop by when you can.

Fencejumper and I will provide the BBQ and a few sides. If you have a specialty you make please feel free to bring it!

We'll have a few chairs available but bringing your moto-camping chair is still probably a good idea. BYOB if want anything other than natty light.

Thinking this would be a hangout, eat some bbq, and knock out some easy maintenance items or at least hit them with a fresh set of eyes.  I'm thinking things like fork seal replacements, oil changes, non-touring bike tire swaps and what have you.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday!

I hope I can make this but I have a lot going on in April so I'll have to wait and see if I can make it.

Probably not on the menu unless some of y'all want to pony up but Ben's smoked Prime Rib is the SHIZNIT!

Don't mind the green stuff, it was just plate decoration!

I'm down for this.  Meet some of you dudes I've followed online for a while and get a second look at my DRZ before the Bankhead rally later in April to make sure she's ready to rumble.

On a Saturday aye? Homewood / Birmingham is a good 2 hours from me (scottsboro) but I may still make it! If the weather is nice, I could take the V Strom there.

Speak for yourself. And, David, don't leave your keys in your bike. I know a few who may try to ride your bike up a rock for you!

Chitza and fencejumper... Not sure how I missed your replies here!

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is just hanging out and not any riding, right? As fun as it would be to take the Strom up rock ledges.... That's what the WR426 is for!! Which I may bring with me. It doesn't have a key... But heres the deal. If you can kick start it, you can ride it. Most people don't know how to work the manual decompression to get it started.

What is the timeframe? I'm free that day so its likely ill come. The Vee is in the shop getting tuned up, which leaves me with driving the car unless he finishes with it in time.

Speaking of the WR426... Anyone here decent with spokes? I know nothing about it. And it needs a little spoke work. I had one come off and flop around lol. This might be a decent time to learn some knowledge from someone who knows more than me.

@David DoubleEX  This is mostly just a hang around and eat some good food kind of event! We will be doing some wrenching if people need help figuring something out.

I don't think we have a truing stand but we can make one from a static tire balancer so bring the wheel with you!

So this is what we have:

I figured we could put a dial indicator or just a piece of wood or plastic to tell us if the wheel is true. @springer is yours fancier than this? We can meet up tomorrow at the usual place if so!
Title: Re: Spring Maintenance Day & BBQ - April 7th
Post by: springer on April 02, 2018, 11:44:16 AM
It is about the same. I have a dial indicator but generally I do not use it, I use the solid pointy thing.(I find it to be just as fast and about as accurate)  Set it up so it barely touches the rim at its farthest deviation and true from there. Most rims will not have a lot of deviation unless the rim it self is warped.
I find the dial indicator useful when the wheel needs to be rebuilt. (New rim, new spokes)

Looks like y'all are good to go! ;)

I take a magic marker and hold it close to the rim. Where it makes a mark is the wobble, loosen the spokes on that side, tighten on the other. Repeat on the other side of the wheel...

the first time I saw s guy using chalk I thought he was crazy. we had all these expensive/precision tools for stuff like that.

then he schooled everyone that thought they knew stuff by finishing in 1/10 the time, made coffee, and helped us with the tricky parts, like offset and dish..... didn't even say a thing about us trying to use front wheel spokes on  rear wheel..

great seeing my dear old friends and my newer ones today.

thanks Ben and David for hosting and feeding us in such a tasty way, that was delicious!

just so everyone knows, bens a pretty selfless guy, he waited until everyone was done and gone, before he started on his own machine. I think the results are going to be very good for the ducati , it looked like a great start.

thanks again, we need to do this again!

done:
three tire changes
supported l assorted fixes/adjustments on a wr426, and review of future additions from the ktm parts bin to the Kawasaki project.

lots of fun.

I really enjoyed hanging out with Karla and Buzz, man I miss seeing y'all ! everyone else to of course, I just never see them anymore. :-)

A big thank you to everyone who came out. It was wonderful to see some familiar faces and meeting a few new ones. Also, a big thanks to @Fencejumper09 for helping setup and splitting the food with me.

Looking forward to doing it again soon!

I only got a couple of pictures before my hands were covered in Slime!

Let it begin!

These were awesome! @Chitza made some delicious bacon and jalapeno deviled eggs!

No pictures of the final product but these tires were eventually installed! (Some more than once)

No pictures of @sctparker or @DonJuan but they sure helped with the tires!
