Title: Dual-Sporting the Free State VII....May 13-15
Post by: Al Goodwin on January 26, 2016, 10:57:47 AM
Someone told me the 8th is mother's day....so we'll move it to the following weekend.......

....It's almost that time of year again folks.... Our Free-State ride will be on us soon.

Campout at Brushy Lake Friday night, or just show up Saturday morning for free breakfast and the long days riding through the beautiful Bankhead Forest.

http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/alabama/recreation/recarea/?recid=30083&actid=42

Lunch stop at Chef Troys Talk of the Town in Houston, Al.

http://www.cheftroystalkofthetown.com/

.....Music, all y'all that play guitar, mandolin, banjo, etc...etc,,,BRING'EM.

The ride will be "BIG BIKE FRIENDLY".....depending on how many show up we'll divide into 2, possibly 3 groups.  Anyone with roll-chart holders I'll have the route printed out for those that want it.

.The BIG grill will be on-site for "sausage fest" Friday night....bring your meat!!!!!   We'll grill it up.

.(http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k258/allenandtonya/motorcycle%20pics/FullSizeRender_zpswnxncpca.jpg) (http://s90.photobucket.com/user/allenandtonya/media/motorcycle%20pics/FullSizeRender_zpswnxncpca.jpg.html)

.Saturdays ride will require tags, etc.... optional Sunday ride around the Flint Creek trail system.  So, if you're hauling your bike to the ride, you can through your dirt-bike on there as well...or, ride your dual-sport around the trail.  16 miles of trail.

Definitely in for this one!

Let me know if you need any help! I know you have the routes down after so many years but if you want to explore some new roads just let me know!

If you want to run the route before hand I can track it for electronic distribution if anyone who wants to lead separate groups!

We'll have beer tasting, right...JOHN ALDERMAN??......Music, all y'all that play guitar, mandolin, banjo, etc...etc,,,

Alcohol is illegal so there will of course be nothing but soft drinks allowed.

I will bring along a cigar box guitar or two.  I just hope your hearing is as poor as my playing.

See you all there.

You're correct John Alderman, I'd confused this with March Moto Madness..... ::)

Bankhead Forest has more bugs than Talladega Forest, in my opinion.  Bring your bug repellent!

Just a busy time of year...Mothers Day vs. Brew Fest...... :-\

I'm actually working that Friday as well, but we'll go down Wednesday night and get several of the sites paid for so we can get our usual spots.

I'll work on it tonight, there'll be a few changes from last year, try to get the more difficult/FUN stuff earlier in the day.

I took off work that Friday....so we'll be there Thursday night.

I'll reserve as many sites as I can under "Goodwin".....If my name is on it y'all can set-up there.

Remember, tents must be on the tent pad(gravel surrounded by cross-ties)...I think hammocks can hang anywhere around the site.

Alcoholic beverages forbidden.......

Truth is, I don't think they'll last a year! Nobody in his family thinks he should be marrying his fiancé.

I've got BAD news folks.....

Storm damage from last weeks storms caused some damage at the Brushy Lake Rec. area.....campground is CLOSED !!!!! >:(

Went to the Ranger station and got some information, more than likely it'll be closed until mid-summer, not good, but...there are other camping area around.  None have showers, some have toilets, some primitive only.  I'm doing some research on a couple of spots....More information, links, and pictures to come.

Suggestions...PLEASE

Brushy Lake....some BIG trees down.  They're going to have a "salvage timber" sale on all these tall/big pines.  This is what'll take some time.

I am really thinking about riding up there, any chance you all will have some extra room in the cooler for my sausage and beer?  ???

How far is this spot from the closest convenience store? I will need to grab a gallon or two of water.

Thanks for all the leg work!

I'll do an official "pre-ride" this upcoming week, make sure some of the less traveled roads have any issues....

Yes. I'll print off some routes for roll-charts....

AND....If we have as large a group as last year, 28 bikes, we'll need to split up into 2, possibly 3 groups.  I've got a roll-chart holder someone in the other group could use, but only 1...so, if anyone else has a chart holder it's be GREAT !!!!

ALSO.....anyone with an "off-road" only bike....we could possibly have a group ride Sunday morning at the Flint Creek trail....

16 miles of ATV width trails.....$5/bike...I think...

So....even if you don't have a dual-sport bike, you can haul it, campout with us, and ride here.

I've got more miles pre-lunch, miss the lunch rush at Chef Troys by being there a bit later.......So, let's pull out around 9:30 Saturday morning...

Breakfast at 8am.

This route is 140ish miles, 80 before lunch, and 60 after.  I think we'll have time for more miles Saturday, but y'all can free-lance, maybe a loop around Flint Creek Trail??

OR..... story telling time at camp.

In that case, I better find some good knobbies. :)

I'm just too lazy to put the dirt wheels back on the Terra...as long as there's no gnarly hill climbs or mud pits,  I should be fine.

There were a few mud holes last year but I made it through with my semi-street tires.  I did pressure down for sand....

It looks like this campground is right off of 33.  Is there a sign or some way to identify it.  Is it on the east or west side of the road?

East side of 33, just south of the Black Warrior Work Center, just north of CR 9.

I think there was leftover everything last year that was consumed Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

I'd like to thank all who came and rode with us....the most PERFECT weather we've ever had at this event.

McDougle camp worked out well for us, although the traffic noise, during the day Friday was a bit annoying, it calmed down in the evenings.

I promise, if we have an event there again....I'll make a larger sign...and I apologize for a few ::)missed turns in the afternoon....any of y'all ever tried following a roll-chart backwards? :o

I'd like some feedback on the weekend....pros and cons of it all....route, McDougle camp, lunch stop, etc.....

THANKS

Thanks for hosting and putting on the ride.

I found the camp site Saturday morning by entering the Lat/long in my phone's GPS. I blew by it Saturday afternoon when my phone was dead. lol

Breakfast Saturday morning was great. It really hit the spot.

The dirt roads to the river were good. The gravel roads were OK. It was a good mix of asphalt, gravel and dirt roads.

Lunch - food and service was good.

I'll try to make it again next year.

I think it was a good ride (with a couple of exceptions). Good mix of dirt roads and twistie asphalt. Met a few new friends and rode with some I've known for a while. Food was excellent as always. I can't think of anything that would have made it better. Except I would've loved to brought my bike home in one piece. But that one is on me.
Thanks for putting this on. Looking forward to the next one.

Thanks Al for organizing this event.  I'm really glad I was able to make it this year.  I had a great time.  I did a separate ride report here:  http://bamarides.com/ride/index.php?topic=1026.0 (http://bamarides.com/ride/index.php?topic=1026.0)

As for feedback.  Next year I'd have everyone post what they were bringing.  We had way too much of some things such as buns but nobody brought firewood.  Some people commented that they had firewood at home but didn't bring it because there was way too much last year.  Since this was my first year I can't comment on the campground compared to Brush Lake. Since several people drove there we had plenty of chairs for everyone to sit in.   If we use the same campground it would be a good idea to have better directions and a bigger sign although everyone did eventually find the place.

Thanks again Al and you to Melony for feeding us.

For everyone who didn't come, Ya'll missed out on a great time.
