Title: Allsport Powersports, Decatur
Post by: Nice Goat on June 11, 2016, 04:31:30 PM

Nice group of folks.  Steve, Dean, Dawn, and the rest of the gang are always friendly, helpful, and willing to just stand around and chat for as long as you want.  The occasional open house cookouts are nice also.

So, I went by there again today.  I've been back a couple of times since the last cookout, checking out a leftover 2015 KLR650.  I've been on the fence about buying it, but this time, Dean and Steve made me an offer that I could not refuse.

Meet my new handyman, Mr. Greenjeans.

Congrats!  Now be careful.  Those KLRs are beasts that will wheelie at the twitch of your wrist.......just ask kdtrull ;)

Yahoooo!  I was all around your back yard today...thought about you and how long until you get another one.
So...where we going tomorrow?  ;D

That is a great color combo, BTW.  I like it better than the green 2008's.  The green/silver just didn't look as good.

Kool! I sat on that bike a week ago last Thursday. My legs are to short for it but dang did that Kaw 1700 dresser feel good.

Looks great! Enjoy it and remember, only you can prevent those wheelies! :o

OK, knucklehead....are we gonna' have to wait until every available option is installed and calibrated or can you just give us a sneak peak or two of the bike in action.  It's been a WHOLE day already.....what gives?  You should have a 4-page ride report posted by now....WTF...over?

Ha ha!  Mrs. Goat and I did 160 miles today ... on the Versys.   Went all over Sand Mtn, Chandler Mtn, Tumlin Gap, then over to Guntersville for late lunch at Wintzell's.  I tried to talk her into riding the KLR with me, but she wanted comfort today.  I'll get her on the KLR soon though, maybe next weekend.

Nice bike! But I don't blame you for hauling your bride on the comfortable bike. I have talked my wife into riding on the KLR a couple of times, but she ain't sold on the idea of taking a long trip yet.

At least she will ride with you. Doesn't matter what kind of bike I have my wife will not get on the back of it. She says one of us (her) has to take care of the other if something happens. It has happened in the past and she took good care of me.

I stopped by Allsport today and talked to Steve, Dean and some of the other guys.  Steve asked about a good time to have another Bamarides appreciation day with some free food.  I told him probably March would be good.  Anyone know of any conflicts in March or have any suggestions?

I also got to take their Smax for a short spin.  This is a scooter I'm considering so I really appreciated being able to take it for a spin.  How many dealers out there still allow test rides?

I'll do a separate thread on my impressions of this scooter.

My Versys 1000 is due for checking the valve clearances and replacing all the brake fluid.  It's easier to get the valve cover off if you remove some coolant hoses, so it'll get a coolant flush also.

I normally like to do my own maintenance, but with all the stuff I have going on right now, I'm going to let Allsport's service department take care of it for me.  I'll take V1Kky to them early this week.  I'm sure they'll take care of her.

I took my V650 there a week or so ago.  They checked the valves, all in spec, changed the plugs and synced the throttle bodies.  This is a good time of year to get stuff done since they aren't real busy like most of the year.
Title: Re: Allsport Powersports, Decatur
Post by: Nice Goat on February 04, 2017, 07:15:38 PM
Thanks for reminding me.  I'll go ahead and have them replace plugs, sync throttle bodies, and check my idle speed as well.
Title: Re: Allsport Powersports, Decatur
Post by: Nice Goat on February 12, 2017, 11:58:01 AM
Got the bike back from Allsport on Friday.  All the valves were in spec, and they gave me a report of all the clearances.  They said that the throttle bodies were just a tad out of sync, but not too bad.  New spark plugs and new brake fluid also.  I thought that the price was very reasonable for the amount of work that they did.

Took it for a nice little 80 mile loop on the way home.  My "butt dyno" noticed a slightly more responsive character from the bike.  No issues with the work they did.  Ashley, the service manager, said that he rarely sees new bikes needing valve adjustments before 50k miles, so the Versys should be good to go for another 2-3 years.
Title: Re: Allsport Powersports, Decatur
Post by: klaviator on February 12, 2017, 12:46:27 PM
If the valves didn't move in the first 15K miles they should be good for a long time.  I'm not going to get my valves checked at 30K.  Maybe 40 or 50K.  I feel confident in their service department as well.  I think Steve is pretty picky about who he hires.

I work at Allsport. The Tenere is quite possibly my favorite bike. It is a tad bit large for me, but that's why I have the ol' xt 600. I really hope they bring in that 700 model to the US. Yamaha seems to be missing a major mark when it comes to competing against the KLR, the Versys, and numerous other 500-700 cc bikes out on the market. I REALLY hope they bring that bike here.
As it goes for the Tenere come on by and I can help you out or give me a call Id love to see it be ridden and written about here on bama rides. The bike is incredible. Steve as well as one of our mechanics have/had one. They love the handling and the power as well as the classic Yamaha look.
I myself hope to start writing about different bikes I ride that come through the shop. Once it gets warmer of course. BRING ON BIKE SEASON!!

Can't say enough about these guys. I went in with a number that I was willing to pay and they were within $200.00 on the first hit, so I bought it. Easy to work with, fair pricing, and just down right great people.

Thanks Allsport.

Going on vacation with the family this week, so I dropped off the GoldWing this morning for some overdue fluids changes (brake, clutch lever, coolant) and a new air filter.  Always enjoy chatting with the team and checking out the floor stock.  They've got some good deals right now on new leftovers...

We have 3 ordered and they are expected first of January. Keep an eye on here as well as our social media, I have been pretty busy and not active on the forum lately. I plan to give my 2 cents worth and I am praying to the motorcycle gods that our rep brings one to test soon!!! We are wanting to have an unveiling when it gets here so keep posted on that too.

It was a nice day for a ride yesterday so I rode over to Allsport just to browse and BS with Seth (Campbell92).  Seth did mention they want to do another forum/club appreciation day soon.

I did of course also check out the bikes.  They sold their Z900 and are waiting for another one so I was a disappointed to not get to see that.  I was happy to see that they did have a new Yamaha Xmax.

If I didn't already have my Smax and Majesty I'd be buying this scooter.  It's small and efficient enough to be a great around town commuter but also big enough for long distance touring.

If I was a bit younger with more flexible knees I'd be all over this new R4.  It reminds me a lot of my EX500 which was one of my favorite bikes and I put 66,000 miles on it.

They had 2 KLX250s.  I'm not crazy about the cammo paint but the Kawasaki Green one looks great.

They had some Z125s which look like a real blast.

They also had some great deals on the 650 Versys's ,Versi? or whatever the plural of Versys is ;D

Unlike many dealers, they don't add a bunch of fees so those are actual prices.

We also talked a bit about moto camping.  Seth thought that maybe they should carry some Moto camping gear.  Of course they would be competing with places like Dick's, Caballa's and Academy sports so we really didn't know whether that would be a good idea.
Title: Re: Allsport Powersports, Decatur
Post by: Hammerdown77 on February 25, 2018, 10:24:20 AM
First on the moto camping gear, you'd have to tailor it specifically for moto camping. Meaning, lightweight, compact, specialized equipment. If you carry the standard Kelty/MSR/Coleman stuff they have at every other store, then you will have a hard time competing due to volume pricing.

Think more along the lines of Mountain High Outfitters, but perhaps even more specialized. It can be done, but you'd need to do some good market research.

Win, did they have the new Yamaha Venture and did you sit on it? Freedom had one and I got to sit on it and move it around, but not ride it, so I'm curious to hear others' impressions.

Also, do we know when the Tracer 900 GT is coming?

Edit: Ooops, there's a red Venture just peeking in on the left in the pic of the R4
Title: Re: Allsport Powersports, Decatur
Post by: klaviator on February 25, 2018, 04:17:18 PM
They had three of the new Ventures on the floor.  I sat on one last time there.  It felt pretty comfortable but just too big and heavy for me.  All of my bikes are under 500 pounds so all of the big touring bikes feel big and heavy to me.  It will be interesting to see how this bike sells vs the new wing.  I think the Venture is competing with Harley more than it is with the wing.  The new wing seems to be more about performance while the Venture more a comfortable and traditional touring bike that also has all the latest in electronic gadgets.  The wing is closer to the BMW1600LT while the Venture is closer to a Harley.

One big advantage of the Venture, at least for Huntsville area riders is that you can buy one at Allsports.  I'd much rather buy a bike from them than Freedom.

It's a typical dual sport seat, Not quite as bad as KTM dirtbike seats but pretty narrow.  If I got one I'd get a seat concepts seat or something to improve it.  The other issue with this bike, like most small dual sports of today is the small 2 gallon gas tank.  There is a larger tank available from the aftermarket.

I have a buddy who bought a KLX250 several years ago to replace his DR650 and DRZ250.  He has never regretted it.  Even at the higher elevations out west he thought it had enough power although it is no powerhouse.

I am considering the KLX over the Honda 250 dual sport. The Honda I like mainly because of the seat. It's not a tiny narrow thing.

I would not make the decision based on the seat, personally. Not with Seat Concepts having very good, relatively inexpensive seat kits available.

Also, I believe the KLX, at least from the reviews I've read, has a much better suspension front and rear than the standard CRF250. Not sure about the CRF Rally, though.
Title: Re: Allsport Powersports, Decatur
Post by: klaviator on March 05, 2018, 09:20:11 AM
I don't know that the CRF seat is any better than the one on the KLX.  If it is it isn't by much.  Personally I'd take the KLX over the CRF.
Title: Re: Allsport Powersports, Decatur

I can tell you the seat on my 09 klx is horrible after an hour or so. I've got a seat concepts ready to be installed when I can find the time. From past experience it will be a huge improvement.
Neither Honda 250 has any adjustments on the suspension other than rear preload. The klx has damping adjustments on both ends.
Powerwise they are close, but I have only ridden the crf in stock trim.  My klx has a big bore kit, and the last klx I rode was many years ago and have since forgotten what the stocker is like.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing about the seat concepts seat . I have one on my FZ-07. It was a big improvement over the stocker.  Do you think the SC seat is any wider than the stock KLX seat ?

Usually, the SC seat is narrow close to the fuel tank, then widens out where your butt would be. I'll try to remember to take a pic of the two seats sometime this week after work.

The demo unit is ready to ride. Ive been waiting for a perfect day to ride. Been way too wet and cold here lately. I have ridden the new KLX and it reminded me a lot of my old XT350...TRUST ME THATS A GOOD THING. I was talking to Dean earlier and we are going to try to get our Kawasaki rep Don Outlaw to bring some more units for a demo day. Fingers crossed for the Ninja 400 and the Z900rs in particular.

Stock seat vs Seat Concepts KLX250 2009

Stock seat is about 5 3/4" just behind the footpegs;

Seat Concepts is almost 9" at the same point;

I'm told the only difference between the 09-14 KLX and the 18 bike is fuel injection vs a carb on the older bike.

The other thing I would consider before purchasing an '18 is the availability of a larger tank, stock is 2 gallons, mine has an IMS 3 gallon, but the fuel injection bike will need a different tank due to the fuel pump and plumbing.

That is good to hear about the SC seat. So for extra gas, would an alternative be a Rotopax fuel container ? Although I'm not sure if there is a ready made rack to carry it on.

I bought this rack. He lists a Rotopax mount for it.

I also ordered the side racks at the same time.

Oh yea that rack looks great ! I'm kinda leaning towards that instead of a larger fuel tank. I could be wrong about that.

So are there any issues with the larger IMS tank swelling with the gas we have these days ?

They have a one that fits 2006-2007 klx 250's,  I've looked high and low for one to fit my bike.  I'm going to get that with the expansion plate.

The PO said he only ran ethanol free gas, so I don't know about swelling. IMS claims the tank is ethanol compatible. I'm sure I will end up putting regular in it on the road, we'll see.

Went for a little ride over to Allsport today.  My official excuse was that I needed an oil filter for my KLR.  Somehow I ended up spending a few hours buying that oil filter ;)

First of all I spent some time talking to Ben, Seth, and Ashley.  Then of course I had to drool over some of the bikes.

The best looking bike in the showroom IMO.

I even fit on it just fine although I do make the bike look small in this picture.  Kawasaki got the styling and ergonomics just right on this bike

I also spent some time sitting on the Xmax.  The more I sat on this scooter the more I liked it.  If I didn't already have 3 scooters this one would be in my garage.  For those of you not familiar, the Xmax is the white one.

Then as I got ready to leave, another friend (Timbo64) showed up and we must have talked another hour.

The speedo cable on my KLR boke on the Free State ride so I called Allsport and ordered a new one.  Normally I talk to Ben but I got someone I didn't know this time.

A few days later I got a call that it was in.  Saturday I rode over to pick it up.  When I walked in the door I ran into Seth so we talked bikes for a bit.  When I finally went back to the parts counter Ben had my cable in hand AND gave me a discount.

Allsport will continue to get my business.  They are always a pleasure to do business with.

I stopped by Allsport today.  No particular reason.  Just looking around.  I talked to Sett for a while.  Motorcycle sales are slow right now.  They had a lot of bikes marked down at or below cost.  If you are looking to buy this is a good time.

It also looks like they will be a Triumph dealer again soon.  That's good news for the Triumph fans in this area.

Now I just need to sell my KLR to take advantage of those sales ;)

I really Hope the Triumph Dealer part comes about. This is the first I have heard of this, but does seem Triumph is trying harder to work with folks, than in the past few years. They have a great motorcycle, but without dealers, many will walk away and make other choices without a dealer somewhere close by. We really need a dealer in Alabama!

I thought Freedom in Huntsville was a Triumph dealer?

I was working for a multi line dealer in MD before I moved to AL in 2004. They dropped Triumph in 2000 or so because Triumph had dropped the MSRP on their bikes to below dealer cost on the previous year's bikes. All the other manufacturers would give dealers rebates on older stock, and if they dropped MSRP, they would do the same. Triumph, however, wouldn't give any rebates, leaving this dealership with bikes that they were gonna lose money on with every sale.  This dealership was the first in the US to sign up for a Triumph dealership when they made their comeback. The owner was a serious motorcycle enthusiast and really loved Euro bikes.

I believe they still have a couple late '90s Triumphs in crates back in the warehouse. Hopefully Triumph treats it's dealers better now.

Allsport used to be a triumph dealer but dropped them due to ridiculous demands.  Then freedom became a triumph dealer but that only lasted about a year.

I too, have heard horror stories about how the cooperation treated it's dealers. We had a dealer here in Montgomery when triumph began it comeback in'95. They also dropped Triumph around 2000 because of Cooperation demands. Triumph has done a great job in engineering a damn great motorcycle, but their belief that they will outsell the others is not going to happen. Demanding a stand along showroom, attempting to copy the Harley model just won't work. And it's not working for Harley anymore either. Their ride has slowed too, just as all others, but many Harley dealers are stuck with huge buildings and many employees they no longer need. Also a great motorcycle, but they have to face that the motorcycle world is shrinking and must make the needed adjustments if they want to survive. I rode Triumphs and Harley's in the 60's and still ride both today. But I am not looking to buy a new one of either brand. However, do want them both to survive! And Triumph can't expand much in
Alabama without a dealer. Hopefully Triumph cooperation has learned a few lessons and will treat it's dealers as they should. If not they will bury themselves....

LOL, I've done that a couple of times. Sell of one because it hurts to ride. Then have a few good days and think, I need another and buy it, just to find out why I sold the last one.. But a new motorcycle is always fun, whether it was a smart decision or not... Hope to get to do that a few more times yet. I've spent a lot of money on motorcycles during my life, but none of it was ever wasted...

I still haven't rode one, but did get to sit on one at Barbers. For me, it's a TALL motorcycle. Not so much that I can't handle it, however, in the right situation I am sure I would drop it. I am 5' 10" with a 31" inseam. I am tiptoeing on it. But such a beautiful motorcycle. We are living in such a great time of motorcycling. All makes are making fantastic motorcycles for any type of travel imaginable. Just have to decide what fits your budget and what style actually talks back to you!

Got there just before 9am, Ashley took it right away. Finished and riding out at 11am. Oil/filter changed. Topped off all fluids, checked all systems, did an ECU update. I will start doing my own maintenance from now on, but I figured since it was new to me, it was worth having a pro check everything the first time.

Happy with the quick turnaround. Expensive, but everything is nowadays.

Would definitely recommend those guys for service.

Called them about two weeks ago to install new tires on the scooter.  Took it to them late in the day, and it was ready the next day, as promised.  I wouldn't trust anybody else in North Alabama to work on my two-wheeled vehicles.

Last Friday I mounted the 12th front tire on the Yamaha I bought from them just over 5 years ago. Would have to find a cheaper pastime if I had to pay shop rates to do that. Can have the wheel off, tire mounted, wheel installed, and tools put away in less time than it takes to ride there and back.

Meanwhile have been waiting for them to schedule the transmission replacement Yamaha recalled in January. Is a 14 hour job according to Yamaha. Mine alone will bring all service work to a halt for 2 days.

I normally mount my own tires on motorcycles, but this is my first scooter... and I didn't feel like messing with it.

Only 11 on the rear. Had 1 with a leak I couldn't fix and 2 others were great disappointments. Normally average 5 fronts to 4 rears.

I stopped by Allsport today.  I needed some street riding boots and the had some killer deals on their Noru riding gear so I figured I would take a look.  I found a pair of reasonably tall waterproof riding boots and practically stole them for the price I got them for.  If you need boots or gloves they have a good selection.

I also noticed their inventory of new bikes is up.  They had 3 Himalayans and two KLR650s.  They had other bikes as well but these days most people seem to be looking for dual sport bikes.

I stopped by Allsport today.  The showroom seemed pretty full.

Despite all the bikes they didn't have that many Japanese bikes.  Without Triumph and Royal Enfield the showroom would be pretty empty.  I talked to both Nina and Dean.  They are not getting that many Kawasaki's and Yamaha's.  Nina did mention getting a KLX300 but it wasn't on the floor yet.  If you are looking for one don't wait.  Freedom had one in stock a few days ago but we all know where you will get a better deal.

It looks like they have both of the "touring" versions of the new KLR 650. I see one with a top box and one with just the saddlebags.
I personally like the color of the base model. The Pearl Sand Khaki.
Thanks for posting the pictures.

They had three KLR's.  On with bags, one with top box and one without either.  The one with bags had a sold sign on it.

Talked to Dean today.  All Sport is planning to have a Customer Appreciation Day in May, possibly May 14th or May 21st.  There will be refreshments, possibly burgers, dogs, sodas, etc.
