Title: Thursday Night Wrench Club
Post by: bblass on July 09, 2018, 09:07:56 AM
Is there a lack of domestic beer and conversations about oil weights and tire manufactures in your life?

Do you have fork seals that need replacing but don't want to tackle the job until there's a second set of hands available?

Is your bike making a strange ticking noise or do your dirt bike tires need to be swapped?

If you answered yes to any of these questions or didn't, Thursday Night Wrench Club is for you!

Every Thursday night we get together in someone's garage to drink beer and get greasy. Usually it's minor stuff like fork seal replacements, oil changes and valve adjustments but we've been known to go all the way up to a transmission rebuild over two weeks.

You don't have to have something to work on, just a fondness for wrenching. Post up if you're coming or have something to work on.

Usually we have it at my garage but always looking for new hosts. This week we'll finally be cranking the CB450 I got from @Chitza over a year ago but plenty of bandwidth for more.

these are some of the best Hangouts possible, without strippers!

if you don't have maintenance issues, come help someone that does, and enjoy some fantastic company in the process!

Looking forward to seeing everyone this evening. I've got some natty in the fridge but if your tastes skew more bourgeois you may want to bring your beverage of choice.

If you've never made it out to an event before and live in the Birmingham area, this is a good one. Hope you'll join us!

Also, @IceCold4x4 are you bringing the ZRX for a diagnostic?

Thanks to everyone who made it out last night. It was great wrenching, learning some new tricks, and finally finishing the CB450!

Next week is big number 1 bike night but I'd like to do this again week after next, July 26th. Anyone have a project they need done?

I will probably have some repairs after the beatdown colorado is going to put on the 690 but won't be back until August!

I will also need to get the YZ ready for the TKO

Howdy all! Anyone have any lingering projects or maintenance for this week (7/26)?

All I've got is an oil seal to replace on a CB750 and a pilot jet change on the 450 but I'm still down to host and have the beer cold.

First time I have logged in on the new site(even had to do a password reset?) but I thought it was important to point out there is really not a lot of cool stuff going on in Alabama - BUT THIS IS CERTAINLY ONE!

Maybe I should not have to say this, but many things are overlooked in today's busy world.  We prioritize based on family and other social commitments (like what's on TV) but I think if you make ONE of these events you will make more.  I would love to see a regular thing where I know I can hang out with the wide variety of moto-folk I remember from back in the day.  Where can you find that nowadays?

I challenge you to make ONE of these TNWC's, I know they have meant alot to me over the past few months, I get a great deal out of them.  How many people do you know that have committed to ONE NIGHT, every week to wrenching on bikes, or drinking beer, or discussing motos, cussing, or just hanging out?  Let me know who that is and I will join them?

I would like to see some old faces, and maybe some more new faces - I bet you will have a good time, I always do.

Look forward to seeing you Thursday night.

As of Thursday night it looks like all of my bikes will be in "pristine" working order... Guess it's time for a new project!

@dredman has been kicking around building an electric bike for awhile now. I think it could be a fun TNWC group endeavor. Maybe we could have it running by barber!

Be on the lookout for an affordable rolling frame and let's make some magic happen

Man i wish someone would host in my area. Thats a couple hour drive for me.

Maybe by next time, I will have my new 2 bros exhausts installed on my V-strom and just have to ride down there.

Now to find a way to strap my WR forks to my v Strom so we can change the fork seals....

Thanks to everyone who made it out last night! It was a terrific evening of grease, domestic beer, and good conversation.

I failed to take photos again but I'm hoping @springer will post a few of our accomplishments.

Last night we balanced and tuned the CB450, put some new signals on an FZ09 and installed the Eagle Mike doohickey on @2372ighost 's KLR. We also laid out some longer term plans of building an electric bike for vintage fest!

That looks like a great turn out!!

With baby blass soon to be joining us, I would like to pick up hosting this event to continue it's momentum! I do not have the two car garage and tasty natty light but I do have a back yard and basement (slightly conditioned) with many tools! If I can get an 85 Goldwing in the basement I think we can get whatever you have to work on inside too!

So if anyone is interested in it I will be hosting the TNWC at my house (less than 1 mile from Ben's) next Thursday 8/9/2018 at around 7:30!

@dknx has mentioned changing a tire and I will be working on the YZ or the Goldwing! The 690 also developed a flat after some Colorado singletrack!

Feel free to message me for my address.

@bblass feel free to come by if you can get that sweet little girl to sleep!

I wouldn't mind hosting one of these up in Ashville sometime if there's enough interest.  I've got plenty of tools, a lift, tire changer, music, beer, etc.  It's just a bit of a drive for some.

For those who aren't familiar, Ashville is in St Clair county.  Kind of between Springville and Gadsden, just north of Pell City.  I'm 12 miles from the PC Walmarks.

Well this isn't really about the Thursday Night Wrench Club, but it is about working on my motorcycles....a little easier.
Several years ago I bought 1 of those tire changing do-dads to help me take a tire off the rim. I would just use it on the concrete floor, kneeling down. I would then true and balance the tire the same way. Kneeing down to use the balance stand.
Well I made a metal table out of 2x2 box beam, welded a 3ft x 4 ft piece of 1/8th plate as a top. I then mounted 4 castors, 2 of them locking, to the bottom of the table. Well today I finished it. Mounted a vise, my tire changing stand, and made an attachment thingy for the wheel balance thingy.

BAM! No more kneeling and hunching over to change my tires.  ;)

Now all that is left is to clean up and arrange my carport again. 1 job ALWAYS leads to another...

This Thursday is the last summer bike night at Big Number 1. Someone from our crew has won the slow roll every time this year and it's imperative we go down undefeated. A stalled bike gave @Fencejumper09 the win over @dredman last month. I'm looking forward to an epic rematch this Thursday night! Or perhaps @kylepeterson will show up in time to take them both to school?

Regular wrenching activities to hopefully resume next Thursday, the 23rd

Got something HUGE to do. And I do mean HUGE!
1. Change both tires on the AT.
2. Install the Outex system thingie on both rims.
(WTF is the Outex system? Good question...go here for information;
https://www.ebay.com/itm/CRF1000L-Africa-Twin-Spoke-Wheel-Tubeless-Kit-21-2-15-18-4-00-MT-FR21214-/291698243582
Then watch the Youtube video below \/)

So, to big of a project? To be honest, I am thinking so but maybe just 1 tire/rim?

Had a good time I did! Nice ride over, had a couple of free soda's, ate a free hamburger, talk motorcycles, and had a dry ride home.  ;)

All in all, a good evening to be out and about.

First up, a crappy video of some funny timed races...on tricycles.  :D

Thursday's looking like good wrenching weather!

On tap we've got electric bike planning (the project still needs a name), installing a tusk street kit on @IceCold4x4's KDX and possibly sealing up some rims if @springer doesn't knock it out at @KevinB 's tonight (Kevin has a way better setup than my trash can & spoons!)

Plus anything any one else would like to bring!

Pretty exciting to see two week night events planned in one week - hope you'll come join us for one of them!

If I can get the kids homework done, my plan is to ride over.  I need to get the tag mounted, which requires me to drill it.  Since the move I need to find my charger for the drill.  I may brave it and just bring it and hope I get there with no  LEO issues.  My main thing I would want to start with is getting the suspension tuned for my weight.

Greetings all! Unfortunately I won't be able to host TNWC at my house this week. It's wide open if anyone wants to pick it up or we can resume at my garage next Thursday, September 6th.

Hopefully by then we'll have an electric motor and can start a cardboard fab plan!

Well got a rear tire on the BMW that is only round on most of the sides.
This meaning I will be working a little late to put tires on it.
If you want to stop by the shop I will be at
8001 parkway drive
Leeds
You are welcome to hang out.
We can twist wrenches on something if you have something simple.
We close at 6 so anytime after then.

TNWC at my house, Sept 6th @ 7. If the donated electric motor is here in time we'll begin the measuring and making cardboard mockups on the electric bike (name to still be chosen).

Also, there's a new project bike in the garage - an '80 Ironhead Sportster. This week we'll be doing some high level diagnostic tests: leakdown, scope, etc. If you've never diagnosed an old motor before come join us and learn a few things. If you have, come join us and teach us a few things!

As always, plenty of room for maintenance and other projects. Looking forward to seeing everyone Thursday!

Thursday Night Wrench Club - Ben's garage September 13th @ 7PM - We've got a few options on tap this week

o Fork seal maintenance & replacement
o Continuing work on the IronHead - top end if the rings come in, the fine art of carburetor cleaning if they don't
o Electric motor mounting and fabrication on the still unnamed electric bike
o Free beer!

Plus anything else anyone wants to bring and tear into! Surely someone has a tire that needs mounting...

Hope to see you there!

When you've got a welder, you've always got the right tool!

Thanks to everyone who came out and braved the weather last night. It was a great time doing the ignition on the RD350 and learning the finer points of ignition advance and retard.

Next week is the last Big No 1 bike night. Come out and see the MC-AL crew dominate the slow race and the tire toss! We'll be back at it September 27th getting vintage bikes ready for Barber and taking donations anyone has for the booth.

I will be there. I'll contribute some $ for food.
Need some ideas on fabbing up a fixture to hold the anti-lock sensor on the front fork of the GSX.

Depending on the rain, we may not be grilling tonight. But we'll still be out in the shop! I've promised a buddy we'd have his valves done in time for the SECCA race Saturday and by damn we're going to deliver

Home safe, and almost dry, even!  Thanks Ben for the hospitality, and the opportunity to visit with some old friends, and meet a few new ones. I'll try to make it to another one soon!

Another good get together at TNWC. Maydaymike gets an attaboy for being on two wheels.

P.S. it takes 14 attaboys to make up for one "awshit"

Thanks to everyone who came out last night in the rain! We adjusted valves, timed an engine, broke a chain and realized I ordered the wrong parts...

All in all, a mostly successful evening!

It was a great night of getting shit done!

Once I got there we figured out the subpar work from the other group!

Should probably check that book of fire fuel to understand the timing!! 2 teeth off!

Spring is right around the corner and the evenings are warming up again. That means it's time to get wrench club up and humming once more!

Unfortunately, my family will be moving soon and it's unlikely that I'll be able to find another house with a detached garage. While workshop space is a priority on my check list, I'll be unable to host for a month or so while things are in flux. I know @IceCold4x4 has offered to host a few times in the past and he has some projects we could learn on. Any other takers?

Since this will likely be my garage's swansong wrench party, how do the usual suspects feel about having it on a Saturday afternoon and doing bbq? Working on rebuilding my 2T dirt bike and theoretically that's something interesting that we could finish in a few hours. As always, additional projects are welcome. I'm thinking March 30th as a tentative date if there's interest.

I can't do March 30th but maybe I can host in the future if people don't mind hanging in a basement!

To be fair, i did say theoretically.

But you're right, maybe we'll have it ready for the top end and go from there

So I would like to go ahead and get a TNWC on the schedule for next week at my place in Homewood (PM for address)

I have a buddy with a 2004 Harley Sportster 883 with starting issues.  The bike has been sitting up for a couple years on a battery tender so I believe a carb clean and rebuild will be necessary.

Anyone with some experience working on these Harley's will be appreciated and paid in shitty pizza and watered down beers.

Let me know if you can make it so I know how much pizza and beer I need to get!

As always, feel free to bring any projects you have laying around and I promise not to use the hammer on them!

I need to put some fresh Rotella in the YZ  :D !

Also need to tighten the chain on the 990 if anyone has a rear stand @bblass

Is anyone else planning to join us? Trying to look at how much pizza we may need!

I've got a KTM 200 that just had the engine rebuilt and needs to be buttoned up. I'd be willing to host if if you want to work on it and we could knock out your chain and any other maintenance items anyone brings.

If you don't mind hosting that would probably be easiest!

I will still handle pizza!

I would have thought all of this pizza talk would have gotten @kylepeterson and @Mulley  all riled up!

Don't mind at all! This will be the old garage's swan song more than likely. 7 work for everyone?

Ya'll do me a favor and don't honk or rev your engine when you pull up to the gate. My daughter's room is right next to it and I really don't want my lovely wife to come out and murder us all for waking up Maddie.

Thursday nights usually don't work for me. My daughter has choir followed by two dance classes. So we have daddy/daughter date night and grab a quick dinner between classes. I do want to get pizza now. So thanks for that.

The pizza was pretty tastey!

We had a good representation of bikes last night! From dual sports to sport bikes!

Some intricate work was going down on a FZR400 rear seat cowl which apparently is a pretty hard to come by part!

An oil change went down on @David DoubleEX Vstrom! He wins the long haul award for coming in from Scottsboro for some Little Caesars!

Something is not quite right @Mulley and @kylepeterson it turns out we needed a little more tension on the kick starter spring! @bblass is disheartened that the mighty 200 isn't running at the end of the night and @dredman was rubbing it in with common sense like "hey you know you can tighten your chain without lifting the rear wheel"

We ogled a newish 690 enduro and tightened the chain on my 990. It was a fun night! It was good to see all those who came by!
