Title: Dualsport Ride leaving Ardmore area 9/5?
Post by: thinwater on August 30, 2020, 06:42:39 PM
Edit update, Shell Station in Ardmore at end of Hwy 110 at 9am.

I've been having trouble viewing the site today, anyway now it seems good.  Keep in mind its Labor Day weekend, so how many people would be interested in a DS ride on 9/5/2020 leaving from the Ardmore-ish area.  How far out would you be coming from along with or just how much of a ride could you stand when considering your journey to get here and back?

No matter the route this would all be legal county roads, so not heavily technical stuff, a couple are very infrequently maintained and could be include or excluded according to bike size/experiance ratio of showing up riders.

I'll be there.  Now that I have a better seat I'm up for a reasonably long ride.

I'm up for this one. I'll have to haul up since I'm 1:30 away interstate.

What would be your ideal meeting time with that kind of travel to get here?  9am?

You are welcome to leave your truck at my place but you might want to check with @thinwater as he is closer to the meeting place and less out of the way.

Long term weather forecast looks good.  80s and dry with a chance of rain on Friday which would be great since it would keep the dust down.  Luckily many of the dirt roads are in the shade and don't tend to get dusty.  It's the ones running past farm fields that can get dusty.

How long of a ride are you up for?  I worked on a route today, first cut, it was 7 hrs no breaks no lunch so that would wind up being over 8.5 hrs with an hour lunch and 10minute breaks ever 45 minutes ish.   It can be cut down by a couple of hours easily.  You're coming a long way, I want you to get your days worth without you begging for the end before we get there.

I'll be there. I'll have to find a back road to the meet up cause I'm not riding forty miles on I65 with the CRF. Doesn't matter how long the day is, I have plenty of Aleve.  :D

There are gas stations.   I would recommend riding your KLR.  There is nothing all that hard on this ride.  Randy did most of this stuff on his CB500X.  A lot of this ride will be on paved roads although much of that pavement is pretty rough and more suitable for a dual sport or adventure bike than a street bike.

If I wind up leading it instead of Klaviator, there is a way better chance. :D  I think @Pepperlady is choosing a DR200 if that helps you decide.  There will be 3 or 4, one or two mile stents on Hwy 64 (divded 4 lane).  55 is still a legal speed on that road too!  Her other ride is a Honda 250L so not a heap of top end difference.

I will be on my KLX.  There is some stuff on this ride I wouldn't want to do on my Versys.  Actually, the KLX is more fun on the paved goat trails as well.  Bring one of your smaller Dual sports if you want.  We'll keep the speeds down on the faster roads.

There are a few sections that are pretty rocky and/or rutted.

Here's the plan.

Meet at the Shell station in Ardmore at 9.  I will lead the ride before lunch.  It will be a mix of paved roads, paved goat trails and dirt/gravel roads.  One of the dirt roads has a long rutted out hill.  Other than that it's all pretty easy.

Lunch will be at Campbell Station.  Thinwater will lead the ride after lunch.  Some of the dirt after lunch will be more challenging but nothing real hard.

If you have a small tank or limited range let us know and we'll be sure to plan for enough gas stops.

Great ride today. I got 330 miles so maybe 300 corrected. Rolled in just before 8:00. A twelve hour day on a bad seat. Loved it!

10 riders showed up at the usual meeting place in Ardmore. Rich ( @2372ighost ) showed up on a bike no one was expecting.

What is it?

It was a bike that I had never heard of before. A Bashan Brozz 250. Yes its one of those dirt cheap Chinese bikes. Rich paid about 1/3 what a KLX230 would cost. It has a clone of an old Honda aircooled 230cc motor. Unlike pretty much any modern dual sport bike this one has a comfortable seat and a 3 gallon gas tank. Also, inverted forks, dual discs with steel braided brake lines, a tach, fuel guage, electric and kick starting. How about a key fob? That can start the bike remotely.

I was impressed. But how would it actually perform? This was the first real ride on this bike for Rich.

We also had a CRF450, my KLX250, a DR650.

The morning ride was mostly paved country roads with a few dirt roads thrown in.

Most of the paved roads had no centerline and were a bit rough.

.

My route was out in the boonies and didn't take us past any convenient stopping places. I probably waited too long for the first break but finally stopped on the side of a deserted "goat trail".

We were stopped there for probably 15 minutes and not a single car came by.

TWO Himalayans in one place!

At this point @thinwater took the lead as I didn't know exactly where the lunch stop was. I saw a bunch more vintage cars as we rode through town. I'm guessing there was a car club having lunch at Soda Pop Junction.

We finished off back at the Shell station in Ardmore. After BSing a bit I headed home. It looked like a really nice sunset but I never had a really good vantage point to take pics. I took one while riding.

And this one while stopped at a light.

My Odo was at 272 miles when I got home with 70 of that riding to and from the meeting place. I'm glad I got the Seat Concepts seat because my ass would have been in severe pain with the stock seat.

So how did the Bashan Brozz 250 do on the ride?

This was a bone stock Bashan Brozz 250(230cc). I was was hesitant to bring it on this ride. I had put a couple hundred break in miles on it around Jefferson County on back roads keeping the rpms low. When I arrived and saw the competition, I threw caution to the wind and flogged it like a misbehaving mule. I figured if it died or blew up I at least would have plenty of help.😁 The bike woke up during the first 80 mi. because I ran it to the rev limiter in 2nd and 3rd.. I was pleasantly surprised with its performance. I believe that once I decat it and rejet it , will it almost hang with a true 250.
