I don't remember if I saw this idea on another forum or if it came in a dream, but this will be my Ride Challenge for 2019...taking a tour of the U.S. and the world, all without leaving the state.

I plan to hit most of the cities, towns and communities in Alabama that share a name with another major/well known city, another U.S. state, or a foreign country. I'm sure there are some obscure towns in other states and countries that I'm not aware of, but I'll be attempting to grab some of the more well known.

On the itinerary so far...

(* = visited)

- Arlington (Virginia)
- Ashville (North Carolina) *
- Athens  (Greece) *
- Auburn (Michigan)
- Berlin (Germany) *
- Birmingham (England) *
- Bridgeport (Connecticut) *
- Bangor (Maine) *
- Brooklyn (New York)
- Camden (New Jersey)
- Carolina (North and South)
- Cleveland (Ohio) *
- Columbia (South America and South Carolina)
- Cuba (Caribbean Sea)
- Dayton (Ohio)
- Detroit (Michigan) *
- Dodge City (Kansas) *
- Eutaw (Utah, the State...spelled wrong, but sounds right  :) )
- Florence (Italy and South Carolina) *
- Geneva (Switzerland)
- Hartford (Connecticut)
- Hollywood (California) *
- Houston (Texas) *
- Jacksonville (Florida)
- Kansas (the State) *
- Knoxville (Tennessee)
- Leeds (England) *
- Little Nashville (Tennessee) *
- Long Island (New York) *
- Louisville (Kentucky)
- Madison (Wisconsin) *
- Madrid (Spain)
- Memphis (Tennessee)
- Oxford (England) *
- Phenix City (Arizona...close enough to Phoenix)
- Princeton (New Jersey) *
- Providence (Rhode Island)
- Roanoke (Virginia) *
- Texasville (Texas, the State)
- Trenton (New Jersey) *
- Troy (Turkey)
- Scottland (Scotland...not the same spelling, but close enough)

Some of these may be nothing more than a dirt patch at a county road intersection...I'll get a pic as close as I can to what Google Maps shows as their official location (and hopefully something with the name on it).

Anyone else is welcome to play the game if they'd like.

You missed Eutaw.

On some maps there is Little Nashville here in the valley. You can't get to the actual place on the map that I know of, but there is a sign on County Rd 20 just as you cross the river.

Great idea. You need to post up when you ride, so others can join in.  More fun with others!!

And as for spelling that is different, don't forget pronunciation. Don't go to Madrid, AL and pronounce it like you're in Spain. All 5 residents there will whoop you.

I'm going to go ahead and mark Cleveland as done...grabbed this pic on Sunday as I was passing through.

Thanks for the additional suggestions...added to the list.

I'll be skipping the generics like Oak Grove, Shady Grove, Mt. Olive, etc. Seems like each county in Alabama has one of each, and I'd imagine other states have a dozen or so as well.

A few from Jackson County.

Bridgeport (Connecticut)
Hollywood (Fla and Cal.) The one in Alabama claims to be the first one.  :)
Trenton (Ga, NJ)
Princeton (NJ)
Macedonia (Greece)
Francisco   (I know it's missing the SAN, you can count it if you want)

Dead Towns of Alabama
Bellefonte (PA.)
Boston
Bainbridge (Ga, England)
Brownville  (Fla, Tx)
Claiborne  (La.)
Clarksville  (Tn, Indiana)
Erie            (Pa)
Houston     (Tx)
Nottingham (England)
Riverton      (Australia)
Pikeville       (Tn, NC)
Rockcastle(county) (Ky)
Stanton     ( U.S. and England)
Vienna       (Capital of Austria and of course the sausages)
Waldo        (British Columbia ghost town)  Plus you need to find Waldo anytime you are searching.  :)
Washington  ( State and D.C.)

Nice challenge! I might also suggest Jackson, though I suppose that is only big in Mississippi.

Looks like I'm gonna need more 2019.  :o

I added a few more to the list. I Googled "Macedonia" and it showed me several hits and Google Maps shows "Macedonia, AL" in Pickens, Count...I'll skip it as there's probably several communities with that name. I may try and grab Francisco if there's anything with a name...Google Map just showed a general area at the state line.

I was actually forming the idea of the game while we were riding through Jackson County on Sunday...I should have grabbed those while passing through.  :)

The dead/ghost towns might be another challenge if I can finish this one.

Francisco is the last turn before you leave Alabama on Hwy 65. May be hard to find a sign with the name on it. The only place I think has a sign is at CR 232 & Hwy 65. It's 14 miles past Princeton.

Princeton has a Post Office and a couple churches with name.

Trenton has a couple churches with name I think.

Macedonia is on Sand Mt between Section and Bucks Pocket. CR 38 and 43, There is a 4way stop, school, VFD  and a store there. lol
