I'd like to do Newfoundland as well, but I doubt I can get enough time off work to do it all at one time.....since I took a month off this summer, I doubt they'd be happy about another month off next summer. :o

So, just Nova Scotia next summer.....Newfoundland will have to wait until retirement.

I was there some years ago. very nice place. I'd advise seeing the local maritime museum while you're there, they had many titanic items at one time.

Thanks for the update, Al!  I'm holding space in my summer calendar for this ride.  Please let me/us know as you firm up dates for the trip!
One question:  I know passports are required for the border crossing, but is there any special paperwork required for motorcycles?

Thanks again!

Passport or passport card. The card is cheaper but if you ever plan to fly into a country, you will need the passport. As for moto paperwork, I would take registration and proof of insurance that is valid in Canada. I almost lost my tag, so registration would have been necessary. I have Progressive and they sent me a Canadian insurance card. It didn't cost me anything extra. I would recommend you check with your phone carrier on international rates and watch that CLOSELY. My phone bill while in Canada was easily my biggest expense.

OK.....I know I brought this up first, but put me on "standby" for this trip.

Melony, my beautiful wife, is having back surgery tomorrow.  One of the same vertebrae she had repaired this past April.

I'm thinking we didn't allow propped healing time on her last surgery before heading off on a 10,000+ mile ride.  Although her back have her no problems on the ride, and she said she knows when she hurt it again, almost 2 months after we got back, I'm still thinking she needs more time.

Good thing is we're getting this done with over 6 months to heal, if we go after July 4th.

So, y'all say a prayer for us....hope to see y'all soon.

Sorry to hear this Al. Prayers for Melony and you. Hope for a speedy recovery. Takes a long while (I know this from experience) for those bones and soft tissues to heal. I couldn't have done a 1,000 miles, much less 10,000, 6 months after my surgery. It's been a year now and I still have problems with it when I ride for a while (hour or more). Good luck to her and here's hoping for a great outcome this time.

When my ancestors came over they settled in Nova Scotia, lots of Goodwins up there.......

I just talked to the doctor, Melony is in recovery.  The doc said it all went very well.

Now, gotta get on that physical therapy QUICK....LOL

So glad to hear your wife is on the mend.  I had two surgeries on my cervical spine some years ago, and agree that healing time and therapy are the keys to success.  Holding her in our prayers!

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers.

Melony had this same surgery back in April, and had some issues in recovery(3.5 hours before they told me what was going on)...Doc said "alarmingly low blood pressure", but things went GEAT today.  Maybe that's a sign of how well the entire recovery and rehab may go.

Looking at my work schedule, and holidays......For NOW, it'd fit my schedule well if we pulled out, for this trip, on July 4th.

I'm off the 4th-7th, take vacation 8th-11th, and also 16th-19th....giving me 20 days to make this ride.

Work schedules may change, and I'm open for others suggestions...... And, again, this all depends on how Melony heals up from her surgery.

Al, we're still holding this time period on our calendars.  We requested the Canada National Parks pass, but it hasn't arrived yet.  We both have our passports in order, and I'll get the insurance papers for Canada.

Any others expressing interest in going?  Has anyone discussed adjusting the dates at all?

The dates are not set-in-stone as of yet...I've had a couple contact me that these dates wouldn't be good for them.

I know, it'd be difficult to get everyones schedules to line-up for a 3 week trip.  Honestly, I'm very surprised we had 4 bikes all take a month long trip together last summer.

I'll see when we can all, possibly, get together one evening and talk about the logistics of it all.

Recovery is going well.  She'll start her physical therapy next week. ....Now, if we can just whip this pneumonia that's got her down.  It's getting better, just not gone completely.

We're going to take it easier this time around on the recovery of the back surgery.  She done to much, to quickly last summer.

Thanks for asking....

I hope to see everyone some day soon to discuss the trip.

Al,

First the good news:  We got our Canada Parks Pass earlier this week!

Now the not-so-good news:  I injured my right shoulder (complex separation) and will have surgery to fix it tomorrow morning.  After having my left shoulder reworked last summer, I'm quite confident that I'll be back in shape and ready for this ride after tomorrow's surgery.

Hope Melony is equally successful whipping that pneumonia!

Looking forward to this trip!

Melony is doing well with the back recovery...still on the fence about the ride, all depends on how recovery continues.

Well, if we all can't get together on a specific date....maybe we could break up into 2 groups.  The larger the group the slower it moves, 4 bikes in a group, at the most< can make better time than a group larger than that......

Just checked price for Ferry out of Portland Maine and price for my bike and trailer is $140 and price for two Senior discount tickets for Karen and Me is $204. Total one way $344. Might be a little cheaper each way if you get round trip tickets.

OK.....Well, I hate to say it, but Melony and I are OUT on this ride, at least for this summer. :-\

Her surgery in December went well, but the healing and physical therapy process isn't moving along as quickly as we'd hoped.  Therefore, we'll just be taking several short ride/trips this summer instead of the long ride up to NS that we were looking so forward to.

If any of y'all still go, I wish you all the best of luck, and may you have GREAT weather, and drivers without their cell-phones in their hands. :o  She and I are still planning on making this ride, some day.

Take lots of pictures......

The wife and I rode this last summer.  We took a couple weeks around the 4th of July.

We rode up to Montreal, met a couple of Canadians, and rode over to Quebec, taking in the downtown section.  From there it was farther east hugging the St. Lawrence Bay on to Gaspe' to take in the city of Perce', which offers up some exciting view of large rock formations/islands.  Whale watching and lobster where in season.  With the exchange rate lobster was very affordable.  We stayed at a nice cabin located just over the large rock formation with the tunnel thru it.  They don't have a website so reservations are made with a phone.  We lucked into a vacancy for one of the best spots you could have, and it was affordable.  Located at 1-69 Rue du Mont-Joli Perce' QC.  From there our Canadian friends headed back home, so the wife and I continued heading east across New Brunswick, on thru torrential rain and lucked into a five star hotel with a bike rate.  The hotel was a stop for a motocycle rental company out of the New England states.  They were kind enough to offer us the same group rate.  The cost was very affordable for the accommodations.  We even hit up room service.  Truely a change from using the camping gear, even though for this trip it never made it off the bike.   We continued on east and up into Prince Edward Island.  After a brief view around the place, we ferried across to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and continued on east and north to Cape Breton Highlands National Park to ride the Cabot Trail.  We rode the trail counterclockwise which put us on the west side of the trail that evening giving us the sun setting before us.  Plenty of nice places to pull off and take in the scenery.  There are plenty of places to stay, most of which are waterfront.  Also there weren't many hotel chains.  Its mostly mom and pop type of establishments.  Anyway that's the cliff notes version.   Should anyone have any questions or such, feel free.

Al, sorry to hear y'all won't be able to make the trip. :(  But it's definitely better to heal up and get ready to fight another day!

We'll get with Bergman and see whether they still want to try and make the trip, and we'll take it from there.  It's definitely going to be a ride for the storybooks, whether this year or another one!

Best to Melony, and see y'all next ride!
