Ride For Pie, Special Edition!!!(http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n496/gharshman/duval_zpsph77vnas.jpg)
Synopsis:
- Iron Butt
- Florida Keys
- Gypsy Chickens
- Southern-Most Point
- Seafood Dinner
- Key Lime Pie
Wednesday, April 13, 2016Meeting Place: Waffle House/Shell Gas Station, Walker Chapel Road, I-65 Exit 267, Fultondale, Alabama
Meeting Time: 4:15AM, get gas, receipts, photos, quick breakfast
Depart Time: Kickstands up at 5:00AM Central
Goal is to get 1,000 miles while maximizing interstates and avoiding Atlanta. Map and links below. Plan on 18 hours total, including gas stops and breaks. This will be a documented SaddleSore 1000 ride with gas receipts, GPS tracks, etc. If you are not a member of the Iron Butt Association and would like to become a member, the SaddleSore 1000 is the minimum requirement for membership. If you are already an IBA member, you can get another certificate.
Again, this is an
endurance ride. If you have never done at least 500 miles on a motorcycle in one day, you may not be ready for this ride. You have plenty of time in the next four months to work on your stamina, so please get ready.
The Iron Butt ride finishes in Key Largo around midnight Eastern time. We will fill up on gas, get our receipts, then go check into the hotel. Hotels and tent camping are both ridiculously expensive in Key West, so I have reserved two rooms in Key Largo for $161 per night. That is the cheapest that I could find without going into one-star territory. Each room has two queen beds, and I've reserved both rooms for two nights, April 13th and April 14th. I don't care how many people we jam into the rooms. More people equals less cost per person.
Thursday, April 14, 2016After breakfast, we will ride the Keys Overseas Highway for 100 miles to Key West, where we will spend the day doing the tourist thing, including the southern-most point monument, walking around Duval Street, and eating some seafood and Key Lime pie. When we are done, we will ride back to the hotel in Key Largo for the night.
Friday, April 15, 2016Check out of Key Largo hotel, ride US 41 (Tamiami Trail National Scenic Byway) west through the Everglades wilderness, Big Cypress National Preserve, and Everglades National Park. Alligators are a common sight along the scenic Tamiami Trail from Miami to Naples. Unlike Alligator Alley (I-75), the Tamiami Trail is two-lane, and it has no fences to keep wildlife from crossing it. We will also visit the ValueJet Flight 592 Memorial. We will end the day in Steinhatchie, FL, and spend the evening at Good Times Motel & Marina.

Ride Briefing:
- As the ride leader, I will make every effort to ride safely and keep the group out of harm. If that means asking somebody to leave the group, I will do that, if it increases the safety of the group as a whole. As ride participants, it is your responsibility to also ride safely and not encourage reckless behavior in others.
- This is not a high-speed race or a chain-stretcher ride. We will spend the majority of our time with cruise control set near the speed limit or the pace of surrounding traffic. There will be no aggressive riding or passing. A steady rider books more miles, choosing to focus instead on calmness, relaxation, and getting better fuel efficiency. Excess speed causes faster fatigue, more gas stops, and the possibility of a speeding ticket.
- This is an endurance ride. To have the best chance for success, start working on your health and stamina now. Get more exercise, go to bed early, get a good night's sleep, drink more plain water, reduce your stress, eat balanced, nutritious meals, etc. In the last four days before the trip, this will be double important.
- Watch for symptoms of fatigue, and listen to your body. As soon as you are tempted to close an eye, even "for just a second", find the nearest safe place to pull over and take nap. If you find yourself unable to maintain a constant speed, or forgetting to turn high beams down for oncoming traffic, or generally being indecisive, then you are probably fatigued and need to stop. Do not wait for the group to stop --- get another rider's attention, let them know that you are breaking off (point to your chest three times, then point to the side of the road three times), then take the next exit and get some rest.
- Do not bring or use any artificial stimulants to stay awake. Anybody caught nodding off, riding erratically, or taking No-Doz, will be asked to drop out of the ride. You can drink coffee, sodas, etc., because you like them, but not to stay awake.
- Eliminate all distractions and irritants before the ride, no matter how minor they may seem. These things cause stress during the ride and cost you stamina and energy. Even minor aggravations are magnified during a long-distance ride, robbing you of precious energy. Make sure that your bike is well-prepared, comfortable, and set up properly with excellent ergonomics. Long-term rider comfort is the true secret to endurance riding.
- Maintain a good mental attitude. If you really hate rain/heat/cold/night/cagers, and you focus on those things too much, you will not be concentrating on the road, and you will get tired faster. You need to cultivate a feeling of Zen-like peace, or what psychologists call "flow". "Flow" is that point where you are very focused and concentrated on a task, but that focus and concentration is actually energizing you, not sapping energy from you. You might also call it "being in the zone." Figure out how to block negative thoughts and get in the zone.
- Prepare your motorcycle before the trip. We have many miles to cover in a short time. It will not be fair to others if you have not done basic maintenance on your bike and then you break down. Make sure that you have good tires and adequate brake pads. Do an oil and filter change before the trip. Check your cables and hoses. Bring your own tool kit and flat tire repair kit, and bring your cell phone and your credit card also. Accept the fact that you might have to rent a U-Haul truck to get home if you have a serious breakdown.
- Avoid doing major maintenance or installing electrical accessories just before the trip. A long trip is not the time to find out that you made a mistake or installed something incorrectly. Leave time to thoroughly exercise your motorcycle and check for proper behavior before leaving on this trip. This goes for home mechanics and shop work. Even the best mechanic can make a mistake. Try and avoid picking up your motorcycle and heading out directly on this trip. Same goes for gear --- new rainsuits, new helmets, new packing techniques, etc., might not work out the way you hope. Use tried and proven gear.
- Use the gas/rest stops efficiently. Get your gas and receipt, note the odometer, fill out your log, clean your visor/screen, use the restroom, stretch your legs, adjust your gear, and be ready to go, all within 20 minutes. You can drink water and smoke cigarettes while we are riding. Before the trip, get a hydration pack which holds at least 1/2 gallon (or 2 liters) of water. Stay hydrated! Dehydration impacts mental and physical performance, causes soreness, cramping, headaches, fatigue, and can be a direct cause of injury and illness. Whether you are thirsty or not, drink water on a regular schedule.
- Stay away from tractor trailers. They are often poorly maintained, have parts falling off of them or fluids leaking out of them. Also, they block your visibility, cause massive air turbulence, often have tires blow out, etc. Do not follow them, do not ride beside them, and when you have to pass them, do it quickly.
- Learn how to conquer boredom. For me, I like audiobooks and Sour Patch Kids candy.
- Make sure you bring the following items, at a minimum: wallet, money, driver license, debit/ATM card, credit card, keys, cell phone, moto registration, moto insurance card, health insurance card, emergency contact info card, vitamins, aspirin/ibuprofen, sunscreen.
- In order to prevent fraudulent transactions, banks sometimes deactivate your card when they see it being used in unusual locations. Let the bank know that you are going to Florida that weekend. Take plenty of cash from the ATM machine before the trip. I am budgeting about $550 for hotels, food, gas, tolls, and parking.
**** Updated route down due to weather forecast ****
Sounds like a good ride. I have done the SS 1000/24 but never been to Key West.
Pencil me in. I will confirm after the first of the year when I know I can schedule vacation OK.

Cool. There is a pretty good chance that JBMFT will be joining us also.
It clearly ain't after the first of the year already, but.... Vacation is on the books.
Barring some unforeseen impediment, I will be rolling with you. 8)

What he said! :)
I may be able to do this. How many miles between fuel stops? At 70-80 mph I'm only good for 170-180 miles.
I may start from my house and meet up with you at 331 and I-10.
I can probably get a good rate for us at a motel/marina in Steinhatchie, Fl. about 450 miles from Key Largo.
They have a bar & grill on the property, along with cabins. Here's a link to the website. http://goodtimesmotelandmarina.com/
From experience, no need to try to do 175 miles between stops. It can be easily accomplished with ~125 miles between stops, with decent breaks (10 mins or so) and a decent break (30 mins or so) for a rest and a meal.
Different strokes for different folks but I much prefer slightly shorter intervals with a few more breaks along the way.
The posterior appreciates it long about mile 800 thru completion.
But I do acknowledge, this ain't my ride so I go with the flow. ;)
I'm with you fellers. 125 miles between stops is about right for me also.
I've updated the map/link above for the planned fuel stops. Once we get on the Florida Turnpike, we will not get off until Homestead, where we connect with US 1.
Plan on $20 of tolls on the way down. Some of that will be cash, but Florida also uses a Toll-By-Plate system where they simply send you a bill in the mail.

I've been wanting to do this trip and will let you know by middle of January. Wife is having knee replacement on January 12, 2016. Is there a hotel close to where your leaving. Would be leaving from Scottsboro, Al so would be better to stay night before, close to where we leave.

There are a couple of inexpensive hotel options in Fultondale on Walker Chapel Road. I'll be staying in one of them Tuesday night, since it is 50 miles from my home to the starting point, and I don't want to wake my family that early in the morning. I've offered the other bed to Johnny, so he can ride with us for the whole trip.
That's know problem. What hotel are you staying at and I'll plan on getting a room there too?

Sent you a PM
Very interested...I'll see how off-days and comp time accrual works out in the next couple of months.
As long as my shoulder surgery recovery allows this come April, I'm in.
Sweet. This may turn into one of those epic rides with a bit of tomfoolery...
Hell, I'll throw my name in. This sounds extra fun.
Might be fun... Can't commit at this point, but I'm definitely interested.
First thought.
Ride to Key West and get the papers for a Iron Butt ...Sounds interesting.
Then the dates, now do I say I'm in, and buy new tires for this ride ( is there a way to make tires a tax deduction?) or do I pay the MAN and hope for another one ?
I figure if 12 say they are going it's going to be down to about 4 to 6 by the time it gets here,, hope I'm proved wrong . So I'm going to think on it and wear out this set of tires .
Is there a set date you need a head count?

No, you can show up that morning if you like, or whatever you want. It's nice knowing people are interested, but not a requirement to sign up early.
I'm thinking hard about this one. I'll def have to drop in a 18t on the front sprocket as I don't think I could tolerate 1k miles of 5k rpms. But ya I can get about 130 or so on a tank before reserve pretty safe at the moment. Sounds like a great time.
Put me down as tentatively in too. Fox (icecold above) and I talked about doing something similar to this last summer but never could get the dates to work.
I've been wanting to do an Iron Butt to Key West for a few years now. I don't know if that time will work, but go ahead and put me on the list.
Well doo doo, I am going to do this but it will have to wait. Kids 16th bday that weekend.
If anyone would like to share room at Fairfield Inn in Fultondale on April 12, 2016 PM me.
I have added some Ride Briefing notes in the first post. Please take a read through them.
Add me to the list, looks like fun and I enjoy Key West highway. I will be on the Ten so fuel range around 200 plus.
Excellent. I also added some details about Friday, after we depart Key Largo headed back north.
I went to the value jet memorial via airboat. Neat stop you picked there.
Ummm been thinking about doing this trip myself. Lets ride.
I'd love to go.
I would need to up my seat time between now and then. I'm not sure I trust either of my bikes for that kind of ride. I would need to go over a few things on the GS500 between now and then.
I'm glad to see that so many folks are interested! A word on hotel arrangements....
I don't know how many hotels there are in Key Largo, or when they fill up, but I only reserved two rooms at Courtyard Marriott in Key Largo, two queen beds per room. So, whenever you are ready to commit to the trip, tell me if you want one of the four beds that I have reserved. It will be first come, first served, but you need to be 99% positive that you are going before you commit to taking one of the beds. It will cost about $90 per night. If you share a room with me, be aware that I sometimes snore...loudly. Bring earplugs.
Everybody else needs to (a) reserve your own room, or (b) plan on sleeping on the floor/balcony (at a reduced rate).
Johnny knows the owner/guy in Steinhatchie, and he is checking on reservations for 6-12 people.
One other thing...
Don't mean to sound callous, but we have to cover a lot of miles on this trip. Even though I am organizing the ride, I take no responsibility for your well-being. You should pretend like you are taking this trip by yourself and rely/count on only yourself if you have problems. Obviously, the group will try to help briefly, but we reserve the right to leave your ass in Bump-fart Egypt if you have a major problem. Make sure that you and your bike are 100% ready.
Same goes for accidents. Once the ambulance/police arrive, we are leaving you behind without remorse. Moral of the story: Don't have any accidents either.
You are responsible for yourself. Don't ride crazy. Don't ride tired. Don't ride angry. Ride your own ride (...as long as it's not crazy/tired/angry).
Didn't sound callous to me. It's your ride, you call the shots. Having a good understanding of what is expected will go a long way to making this an enjoyable adventure. This will be something that will be talked about for a long time.
BTW, there will be a Harley on the trip.....don't be that guy that breaks down before the Harley does. You don't want to be that guy!

hehe, agreed. Don't break down before the Harley.
and that didn't sound harsh or callous. I wouldn't expect for people to wait on me and possibly ruin their chance at making the run.
Hell, put me down as a definite maybe. I'll know more after the 1st of the year. Sounds like something I don't wanna miss.
I'm very interested I have completed some of this trip in the past but not as an iron butt I have always wanted to getter plate!
Ok, Just got back from Orlando and the Central Florida Highland games. The Florida Troopers are working the WHOLE north end of I-75 hard. We will NOT be able to make up any time in that area if needed. They had probably 35/40 people pulled over between Ocala and I-10. I only saw 2 cars that were not parked behind someone with the Bubble Gum Machines going. Saw one never turn his off and stomp it to the floor to get his next one. I guessed he was running 90+ when he went out of sight the opposite direction. They were running in packs of 4 to 6.
I ran between 73 and 77 Even when being passed by traffic, but no faster. That seamed OK with them. None of the cages in the little group that was swapping around position ever disappeared until the I-10 split.
Watching us, the police and troopers will get bored very quickly. We won't be running any faster than speed limit +5. As Brian noted above, it's not really necessary to complete the SS1000.
Moving time = 15 hours
Average Moving Speed = 1,000 miles / 15 hours = 67 mph
Rest time = 3 hours
Total time = 18 hours
Average overall speed = 1,000 / 18 hours = 56 mph
By the way, I have been collecting goodies for the ride participants....

Maybe we should appoint a blocker...someone to be our "Bandit". :D
Looking forward to this. I am thinking it is gonna be a load of fun.
GlenN, I don't know what the room count status is, but put me down for it if you still have a slot open at our destination. Bed if available, otherwise floor or balcony (I'll hang my hammock).
Also, there is a decent chance I may take a different route home. I'm kinda thinking as long as I'm in the neighborhood I might stop in for a re-visit night in Daytona Beach. I could enjoy a visit to the taffy shop and a walk out on the pier.
Still one of my all time favorite motorcycle road trips:

Yes yes yes I am aware of that. As I said the trip to Orlando was one day there one day back. 515.3 or something in mileage. The only time i got over the 77 was twice. Both times traffic was running so fast I thought it safer to go with the flow, and I it was on I-459 at 4:30 on the way home.
I posted it mostly to start some conversation back up, and to let anyone that might be thinking it is a hall you know what trip that is probably not even possible.
Unless you want a fairly cheap 30 day stay. Really Jail is not a bad deal if you figure in the free room and board, fitness program, clothes, and friends you would never meet otherwise.
Count me in on a room too please.
I have been know to keep rhythm with a McCulloch also.

You can ride my Ducati you just can't ride close to me. After getting back from this last trip I decided quiet pipes are a must. It sounds great. Just loud. 15 hrs and you would be able to claim disability.
I need some floor space also. I don't take up much space!
Ok I've got vacation approved. Barring a major problem I will be on this one. Should we book another room in case of a large group ?

Probably a good idea. We have six people in two rooms already.
Got one at Courtyard Key Largo. 2 nights.
I am thinking about going sounds like a great trip. Have you sat down and come up with a cost on how much this trip will run. If I can go I'll need to start saving my pennies. And I would like to room with some one else and share the cost.
The keys are a little expensive. I would plan to have at least $500 available.
I have a room for 2 nights in Key Largo. Basically $200 a night divided by how many people are in it. Idk about night 3.
Well that's not to bad . Do you have anyone staying with you TFancher? I have another guy who is new who may come with me he is going to put in for time off tomorrow when he gets to work ,maybe we can split the cost of the room and stay with you. Let me know.
Smiley you guys are welcome to stay.
A bunch of fat old dudes sleeping in beds and on the floors after a 1000 mile ride. PLease someone get a soundbite of the sounds coming from that room. Don't forget to take earplugs if you want to sleep good and don't get the cheap ones. I saw lawnster tonight and we talked about it. I wish I didnt have a spine that turned to jelly after 500 miles so I could do this with yall. HEY! Maybe you should get someone to drive a support vehicle behind you to carry junk. Not me but maybe somebody.
It looks like I won't be able to make this one after all. Have fun!

Chelin was a new member right before the crash he has been on some rides already . He is the one I was talking about coming with me. His former screen name was Jose. I Will get with him and about the intro.
New front and rear tires ordered.

Johnny said he knows the owner of the marina in Steinhatchie. He's going to check on a block of rooms for us for the third night.
I'm going to recommend that somebody reserve/start another room in Key Largo... we probably don't want more than three per room...
Booked:
Room #1 - Glenn, Kevin, JT
Room #2 - Brian, Burgman, Lawny
Room #3 - TFanch, Smiley, Chelin
Not booked:
Room #4 - Catang5oh, ...
Obviously, you guys can rearrange yourselves however you want ... I'm just dropping names into slots...

My Uncle Sam is sending me to Japan for training. Looks like I'm out on this one. Hope another one gets setup for next year or this fall. Ya'll be safe and I can't wait to see the ride report
This is now just 12 short days away. A couple of recommendations...
For the next 12 days, try to reduce your stress levels, eat healthy, drink lots of water, go to bed early, and get plenty of sleep. Get in some exercise also. Don't wait until the last minute to pack or do maintenance.
I'm really looking forward to this trip!
I started 2 weeks ago with the maintenance. It's dragging out. I hope to have it back together and new tires on this weekend.
My body will go into shock if I try the other suggestions. lol
We are looking forward to the trip also.
I started a new healthy diet two weeks ago feel a lot better and have more energy. I had new tires on the bike three weak ago doing maintenance on bike now.and started packing at least three weeks ago. Me and Chelin are getting together this weekend to get a ride plan together in case we get separated.
I just ate a medium pizza and I'm on my 3rd (of a possible 12) Yuengling. How's that for a healthy lifestyle?
Seriously I've been trying to get some exercise and eating better. Saturday is my cheat day.
Seriously, the only thing I plan to do/must do is shift to left computer hand mouse starting Monday.
My right wrist/hand will never be normal again and daily use of a computer mouse is just a constant aggravation. Meaning: my hand will be numb before we hit Montgomery and possibly worthless by Mobile if I don't start now letting it "rest".
I am a complete spastic with my left hand but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.
Did you guys just hear that noise across Central Alabama? That was me releasing a huge sigh of relief.
I got a subpoena from the AG's office yesterday for the huge GreeneTrack bingo/gambling debacle that happened a few years ago that is starting trial next Monday. There's no telling how long the trial will last, and I just knew the State was going to find a way to screw my moto vacation (only 2 years and 9 months left of indentured servitude!) . Just found out that due to my insignificant role in the entire circus of an investigation I won't be needed for testimony.

I will start the IV of Monster about 8:30pm Tues, I am rolling to nightshift Monday, then off to Key West at 4:15 Weds.
Yeah. It's getting closer. Looking forward to a good time.
A FWIW comment.... I always carry my spare key whenever I go off on a trip like this. I figured it would suck to be somewhere, like Key West for example, and somehow manage to lose my key.
For the Iron Butt certification, I plan to document this trip to get credit for the ride. I would like for everybody to get credit, but the cost is about $46 each (includes certificate, pins, license plate backer, etc.), but if you do not plan to get IBA credit for the ride, I understand. If you do want to get credit, this is what is required:
- Application form (see below)
- Witness forms at start & end of ride (I will bring copies)
- Gas receipts with time/date/location (you will need to collect these and keep track of them)
- Ride log & GPS tracks (I will provide this)
- Overview map using Google Maps (I will provide this)
They have an electronic application process which allows you to type the application into the body of an e-mail. For this, you would need:
- Name
- Address
- Phone number
- New or existing IBA member
- Age
- Gender
- Driver or passenger
- Name you want on the certificate
- Motorcycle year/make/model
- Odometer start and finish
- and some other ride information which I will provide
If you want me to submit the application for you, you will need to give me the information above with witness forms, gas receipts, odometer readings (start and stop), and $46.
If you want to submit the application yourself, I will give you the ride log, GPS tracks, and overview map. You will need to edit the odometer readings in the ride log for your bike.
Please review the attached forms and print if you plan to get certified.
Thanks!
It appears to be the same distance from Tuscaloosa to Ft. Deposit as from Fultondale. I plan to spend the night at home and meet you guys at the first fuel stop. That is at 6:48 AM.
Is that correct?

Yes, sir. We may arrive a few minutes earlier, depending on how traffic is flowing, but it should be within 10 minutes of that time. Goal will be 20 minutes max for the fuel stop.
My first preference will be to stay on the western side of the exit. Street view shows a Chevron. Fallback station is the Shell on the eastern side of the same exit.

Same for me. Within 2 miles of same distance from my house to Ft. Deposit exit as from Fultondale.
I will plan to be at the Chevron - Exit 142 - at ~6:45 am.
If you are starting from your house, don't forget to stop for gas close to your house, get a pump receipt, make sure that the address, date, and time are on the receipt, and also don't forget to take a picture of your odometer when you stop for gas.
If you want to record your own GPS tracks, a cheap way to do it is using your cell phone. I have an iPhone with an app called MotionX GPS. When you open the app, it tells you when it has acquired GPS signal, then you tell it to start recording. When you are finished, tell it to stop recording, then tell it to e-mail the track to you. You will get an e-mail with a GPX file which can be opened in almost any mapping program. Put your phone in the tankbag connected to a 12v charger or a powerpack, and it will record for 1,000 miles easily. I'm also going to have my handheld GPS as a backup.
Good advice.
I'll have my early am gas receipt.
Also, I will have my Garmin tracking the trip and my SPOT tracker logging the whole thing.
Speaking of SPOT, anybody want the link to share with family or friends so they can keep up with us (the first 130 miles not withstanding)?

Alrighty then here you go:
http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0n6QOCNhaZhqlEbstzFEMZfdy2Np5lQST
I will turn it on when I leave my initial gas fillup Wednesday morning. I plan to have it going every time we ride, for the duration of the trip.
The link is active now but no map or location pins will show (since I don't have it on updating location points to log).
For those who want to share it with friends or family....
It updates every few minutes, not every few seconds.
The map is just like using Google maps.
You can zoom in/zoom out and toggle between map view and sat view.
It has been a while since I searched, but apparently there is now an app for iPhones called "SWConnect" which allows you to report your position to Spotwalla. Very similar to the SPOT service. I downloaded the app and am testing it today. If it works for me today, then I will be running it on my phone for the trip next week and I'll provide my public link also.
There is an app for Android phones called "Bubbler" which also connects to Spotwalla and turns your phone into a tracking device.
The problem with these apps, however, is that they will not work if you do not have cell phone service. The phones can log your location anywhere you have GPS signal, but they can only send data over cell phone towers, so Brian's SPOT service is more reliable in low service areas.
Okay, the app works, so here is my Spotwalla link for the trip next week. Track will only be active from Wednesday to Sunday.

Well, I have been holding out to go. I just picked up another yard. Started trying to figure out how to get it in the schedule. Reality has sank in. If I work 24 hr a day till time to leave I still can't get enough work done. Spring sprang a little early this year.
There is no way I can make it. If I owe anyone on a room just say and I will get the money to you.i really had my heart set on going, but I'm moving my attention to a more reasonable goal for me California Super Bike School in May.

I don't think I have seen a spring like this (work wise) in about 10 years.
I'm scheduling stuff a month out now, and still have people to call back. It's a good problem to have.
So, i had an idea pop up today while doing that work thing. I use a free conference call app for work, which allows multiple parties to participate in the call. I thought about the limits to bluetooth systems between riders, but most phone plans come with unlimited minutes. I was wondering how many here are running bluetooth and have phones connected during riding. It would be a great way to keep the time going by while hammering along the highway.
Let me know what you think, and dont hold back if it sounds stupid.
I like the idea, but I don't have bluetooth. I'd like to have a way to keep up with everyone in case we get separated.
At least have a way to signal an unscheduled stop. So everyone doesn't wonder what happened to you.
I'll be running cruise control most of the trip, so I may lag back at times, since I won't be able to match speeds exact.
I have my uclear bluetoooth connected to my ipod for music.
It is also connected to my phone but I generally don't even have my phone turned on unless I expect to make or receive a call.
My phone stays in my jacket pocket and I have never tried voice activated dialing while riding via the uclear.
I'd be a sketchy participant but am willing to give it a try if that's what others want to do.
As of this moment, we have nine bikes & ten people confirmed.
With that many bikes riding together for 1,000 miles, it will require effort from everybody to keep the group together.
As ride leader, this is my plan to help keep the group together:
- Set cruise control/throttle lock at a reasonable speed, barely over the speed limit.
- Make sure that we stop for fuel every 125 miles, per the itinerary.
- Make sure that we get at least 20 minutes at every rest/fuel stop.
- Lunch will be at Subway in Lloyd, FL (the halfway point). We'll take about 45 minutes there.
- Rest stops will probably expand to 30 minutes after Lloyd to combat fatigue.
- All of this is subject to group approval and acceptance.
I would prefer to keep the group together as much as possible so that we can monitor each other and help each other if necessary. My hope is that reasonable speeds and generous rest breaks will help with that.
Conference call sounds like a neat idea, but I don't know if I could do it the whole way down. I'll probably start the day listening to music, but after lunch I will need some human interaction to keep my energy up. We will definitely want to talk to each other going through Orlando and Miami.
Kevin and I both have the Sena bluetooth system, so I was thinking of asking him to ride sweep position, so he could contact me if anybody had a problem. Despite what I said above, we want to make sure that everybody gets to Key Largo in one piece.
Regarding tools, I packed mine last night. This is what I am bringing:
- Ratchets and extensions -- 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive
- Sockets and combination wrenches -- 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm
- 27mm socket for rear axle, 22mm hex for front axle
- Wrenches & pliers -- medium crescent, small crescent, medium channellock, small vise grip, medium needle nose
- Multi-tool with various bits -- hex, torx, etc.
- Small wire cutters, electrical tape, zip ties and duct tape
- Screwdrivers -- flat head and Phillips in medium, small and precision
- Small bottle of Slime. (I think Kevin is bringing a flat repair kit and small pump.)
- Bag of various sizes of o-rings
So if you don't want to bring a bunch of tools, just bring anything you might need that is not in the list above (e.g., SAE sockets)
I will set up the conference call thing, and provide the number. Basically you call in and enter a pin# and you are in the call. I will look into easier alternatives that dont require anything but dialing the number from your phone. I will also be riding to music, but the nice part is anyone can join or leave the call anytime they like.
I bought a new Sena 10S to replace my SMH10, and have had trouble getting it to pair with Shane's SMH10 (my old SMH10 would pair no problem). If I can't get it to pair with Glenn, I'll add him to one of the three speed dial positions on the 10S so I can contact him mid-flight.
Flat repair-wise, I'll have a Stop-N-Go mushroom plug kit, some rope style plugs, and a small compressor. Anyone with tubes that has a flat, I can hold a flashlight for you...
Good stuff Glenn.
Two things I will mention. Two things that mimic my practices on previous long distance rides.
a) I do NOT worry about trying to keep a tight group when on the interstate in congested/busy metro areas. Two much lane changing and speeding up/slowing down just for the sake of keeping everyone nose-to-tail is not a good practice in my mind. Once traffic and congestion is cleared it is pretty easy to get the group back together. I'm not talking about getting separated by miles. I'm talking about not worrying if a few cars get between me and the bike in front or behind. (Side note - this is why I hate those dumb parade type rides where everybody feels like they have to ride two-abreast or nose-to-tail, with no interruption to "their" group formation. But I digress....)
b) I will not (with a big emphasis on NOT) ride anywhere near close behind a semi, bus, motorhome, or other large vehicle while cruising down the interstate at speed. The thought of a tire casing or lost tread or 4x4 or ladder or who-knows-what, getting kicked up and smacking me about the head is not something that is appealing.
Nor will I ride along side any of the above while waiting to complete a pass.
Both pose unacceptable risks, for me at least. Others might feel different. But since I won't be in the lead, this is not likely to be an issue for me.
It is rare that I have found myself in either undesirable situation on a group ride with guys I know and consider to be good, responsible riders. That said, circumstances come up that we can't always predict. So if you see me speed up or slow down to accomplish a resolution to either a) or b), you will know why.
I will have my very small Slime 12V compressor and tire plugs (sticky rope stuff) and a few basic tools.

Absolutely agree. We are not forming a parade, but I want everybody to at least remain in sight of one another. Preferably, I'd like the whole group within one (1) mile of each other. Aside from that, you are responsible for your own safety and comfort level in all passing and riding situations.

Bike is being washed this afternoon, it will be rain water fresh Wednesday morning and ready to go. It wasn't feeling the nice and shiny look.
Just for fun, I have a couple of places in the Keys that are off the hook for seafood. I am anxious to see if they fit into our trip timing wise.
Sparkys Landing on Marathon Key, fresh fish, best when blackened. They cooked my catch last trip as soon as I got them cleaned and off the boat.

I was just looking at that. It is hard enough to ride 1,000 miles, but doing half of that in scattered thunderstorms will be truly exhausting and potentially dangerous. So, I had a thought....
What if we take a more direct route but still have an option for the SS1000? If we take Hwy. 280 to Columbus, then 82 to Tifton, then interstate south from there, it is only 820 miles to the hotel. Those who are less interested in the SS1000 certificate would enjoy a shorter ride and be in the hotel sooner. Those who want the certificate could continue on to Key West, then double back to the hotel for a total of 1,020 miles.
I'm sorry that I didn't think of it sooner. I think that it accommodates everybody a little better.
Everybody please vote on this, and we will decide by lunch tomorrow.

Okay, it sounds like most are in agreement for a more direct route.
Start time and place remain the same.
We will stop briefly at Hwy. 280 and Valleydale Road (Chilis parking lot, southeast corner) at 5:30AM to meet Tony and anybody else who doesn't want to start in Fultondale. Rally point link: https://goo.gl/maps/KJMTwCkazsT2 (https://goo.gl/maps/KJMTwCkazsT2)

And then we head south. Towards the sandy protuberance.

Yeah, it looks like the farther east we go, the lower the chance of rain. There is still some chance with the new route, but it is much lower. I'm not against riding in the rain, but I'd prefer not to do it for hours on end!
Okay, new stops are planned and attached.

As of this moment, using the new route, our rain forecast percentages are below 20% for the whole route except the area from Ocala to the start of the Florida Turnpike. In that area, it goes up to 50% for the hour that we will be passing through. I can live with that.
But everybody should expect to get a little wet. It is Florida, after all!
If Kevin is on the ride, it will rain! :o
Great luck and riding conditions for y'all tomorrow! If anyone runs into bike troubles/issues within an hour of Dothan, I am off duty, and have a small trailer with wheel chock if need be. I live 6 minutes from a moto shop, and have a slab/garage space for wrenching if needed. Rob Yzf on Facebook.
You guys be careful and use Waze or other traffic monitoring as you get closer to the Keys. I would hate for you to get that close and be stuck in bumper to bumper traffic that eats up your time.
I hope you guys go party it up at Sloppy Joe's in Key West when you're down there. You'll deserve it. Also I hope you guys take your time coming back up and ride the eastern coast some. That's a great ride. Have fun and take pictures especially if you go to Sloppy Joe's!
I rode down and ate breakfast with the group before they headed out.....a couple of, I'm sure, embarasing moments while getting ready to head out......I'm sure Johnny won'y mind the video being passed around, all in fun, glad you, nor the bike, was hurt.
.

AND ....AWAY they go, uhh.....eventually.
Haha! That ultra glide was like "Hell no, I ain't going to Key West."
Was seriously considering doing this trip but decided to ride the BRP at the first of May instead. After watching the videos I wish I'd gone with em now. I know it'll be a fun ride they'll never forget. (Especially the Harley rider ;D) Yall have fun and be careful!
Let's pray the rest of the ride is a little smoother.
Hope this makes you feel better....at least you weren't acting stoopid:

That bike has been fighting me for 3 weeks. I had to make a pit stop and modify the repairs on the battery.
This is a prime example of the good guy that I am. I got the breakdown and wreck out of the way early, so we wouldn't have to worry about it the rest of the day.
I started to bring the title for the bike with me, it better be glad I didn't.
Johnny stopped in Opelika and replaced the zip tie with a metal clamp ... And didn't have another problem for the rest of the way down.
Glad they got all the gremlins out!
