I'm going to take Friday, Sept. 2nd, as a vacation day and have a 4-day weekend around Tellico. This will be a dual-sport weekend for me, but all bikes are welcome. We don't have to stick together, but it would be cool if we had a group of folks hanging out together in the evening.
The plan:
- Leave north Alabama on Friday morning
- No interstate ride to Tellico
- Camp or rent a cabin for three nights
- Explore as many dirt roads as possible on Saturday and Sunday
- Return home on Monday
I'm planning to stay at Cherohala Mountain Trails Campground (CMTC),
http://www.cmtrails.com/ (http://www.cmtrails.com/). Cabins are $50/night, but there are two beds, so you could share a cabin (not a bed) and get away with $25/night. Or you could camp there for $10/day.
Route up on Friday looks something like this:

Okay, just checked their website ... no cabins for that weekend. Looks like it will be camping/hammocking for me!
Got a kitchen pass. Now I just need to make sure I have some leave scheduled around that weekend.
pencil me in...
September is not a good time f taking vacation for me. But I will see what I can do.
I may be able to do this one. If the Husky is gone by then, I'll take the big V...I should be able to handle most of the FS roads on it (probably skip any single track or Witt Rd. water crossings). We're switching back to 8 hr. shifts, so no more 4 day weekends for me once a month. Looks like I'm getting screwed for that weekend, and being the holiday I can't take off comp time.
For tenderfoots like me, looks like the Lodge at Tellico has rooms available...

The Tellico Farmhouse Inn is run by an ADV guy. Good prices and right in town.

Pencil me in too! Camping is fine with me, but there are other cabins in Tellico you can rent for as little as $40 a night. http://www.tellicologcabins.com/cabins.htm (http://www.tellicologcabins.com/cabins.htm)

Cherohala Mountain Trails Campground (CMTC) had a cabin become available, so I booked it for three nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, checkout on Monday).
Cabin has two beds, so if anybody wants to split it, cost is $25 per night.
I'm looking forward to this trip!
Added meet-up details at the beginning. 8:00AM at Jacks in Athens.
I'll split the cabin if still available.

Excellent. Perhaps a Gaseous Effluent Restraint Agreement can be reached. :o
I'm going to try and join y'all. As long as the next BabyRou doesn't come by then.
Btw there's a lot of cool dual sport riding around Tellico Plains

Rough draft of daily routes provided in first post...

We will be mosey our way down to the Ralley in the Valley the next week.

Absolutely! All are welcome.
PTO for Friday the 2nd is secured! Really looking forward to this! The routes look good!
I just noticed RFP #10, as in ride for pie? Where's the pie or is that a surprise?

You could hand me a napkin with 3.14159265359 written on it and I'd be happy....crap...I don't even need that.
We'll find some pie somewhere!
Currently there is a possibility we are headed to the New River Gorge Labor Day weekend, but that's not set in stone yet.
I can't take the Friday off, so if I come up to Tellico Plains, I will ride up after work.
Routes are all in the GPS...
15 days until this ride!
Nobody can predict the weather with any accuracy at 15-days out, but the averages look nice... 86 during the day, 62 at night.
I may ride up with y'all Friday and do some street riding Sat & Sun
Schweet!
Weather seems to be holding up as we get a little closer... only nine days away now...
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will not be able to make this trip. We hate it, but things do happen. Maybe next time.

Got me a room booked in Etowah which is only 12 miles from the campground.
Talked to Wayne today to confirm the reservation.
Checked the weather forecast on two different websites ... still looking good!
Only four more days! Time to start packing!

Suggestion here....add Whigg Meadows to Sunday morning ride....
Benton/MacKay trail....a dead-end road, but a GREAT view and ride.

ALSO.....these 2 points are actually on the same road...no maps show them connecting, but its ONLY the greatest forrest service road up there....I've got some video of it I'll post up tonight.

I found that completely by accident last Fall. I stopped on Sycamore Trail to take a leak. Hadn't seen another soul for a couple of hours, and I was in the middle of nowhere. Mid stream, I hear something..."Is that people??". I had no idea the hiking trail intersected the FS road. Out from the brush pops a group of 6 elderly folks while I'm holding my business.
They asked if I was going to the meadow. "The wha??"
Worth the trip.
*Forgot to add...
When I got up to the meadow, there were more elderly folks (and a few more headed that way that I'd passed riding up the trail)...probably 15 - 20 total. This spot is in the middle of nowhere...I spent a good hour or so reaching it by motorcycle. You don't just park and walk up the hill to it, and some of these people were in their 80's for sure.
Once I parked and began to de-gear, I noticed the clientele and the idyllic-ness of the location...and began to wonder if I'd stumbled into some kind of ethereal, other-worldly situation. I fully expected to watch a spacecraft descend and collect these people for their journey "home". :o
Hmmm, the elusive "Dirt Dragon" ... may have to change the Sunday afternoon route to this.

Got home about 5pm. I decided this morning to take a less direct route home. That new asphalt on the Cherohala was calling my name. Cherohala-->Joyce kilmer-->Meadow Branch-->Rhymers Ferry--->Hwy 28-->Hwy 143 back to Robbinsville. Was an awesome four days! Thanks for putting this together Glen!
Last Sunday morning I came across the Cherahala at 6:30 A.M. It is very peace at that time of day. Sun was just starting to give light to the darkness as I got to the Tenn/NC line. Didn't see a single person or vehicle between Robbinsville and Tellico. Looks like you all had a good time.
Made it home about 3:30 this afternoon. This was a fantastic weekend. Great riding and gorgeous scenery. Very glad that Ken, Jeff, Randy, and Greg were able to make it. We finally found some pie, even if it was the McDonalds strawberry creme pie.
We started off on Starr Mountain...

Hey! I know those people! Say Hi to Philip and his lovely wife.
I think Glenn may have been feeling a little....uhhh..."anxious" (Beetlejuice) about the weekend:

It's neat to see structure and what seems to be the remnants of order out in the middle of, what seems to be, nowhere:
(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss4/kdtrull/2016-09-01%20Tellico/20160903_135104_zpsyxufaf1q.jpg) (http://s556.photobucket.com/user/kdtrull/media/2016-09-01%20Tellico/20160903_135104_zpsyxufaf1q.jpg.html)
Just a few hundred feet from the old concrete "ruins" is some sort of small dam:
(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss4/kdtrull/2016-09-01%20Tellico/20160903_135745_zpsvm9kgdxu.jpg) (http://s556.photobucket.com/user/kdtrull/media/2016-09-01%20Tellico/20160903_135745_zpsvm9kgdxu.jpg.html)
My best guess is that this small dam was used to get water to the old mixer:
(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss4/kdtrull/2016-09-01%20Tellico/20160903_135912_zpsy47n8ha9.jpg) (http://s556.photobucket.com/user/kdtrull/media/2016-09-01%20Tellico/20160903_135912_zpsy47n8ha9.jpg.html)
Panoramic shots make straight lines look like curves. It's a straight line of huge pipe:

Bald River Falls....almost dried up. Boy, does the SE need some rain.

This is from Whigg Meadow. There was a huge assembly of campers there.

Across the top of the bald, there was a group of bird "taggers":

A few steps up from the taggers was a spectacular view. The camera never captures all the details:

Their tent is back there behind Glenn:

This is the fellow we later came to refer to as "Bird Jesus".:

Boy...was this guy ever ate up with the birds:
He gave me a full course in Warbler-handling before he handed me the small critter for release after he had banded it's tiny leg.
Behold, the great and noble Warbler. I think he said it was the Double-breasted, diamond-eyed, snapper-back, blue-something warbler:

I'm pretty sure that's Photoshopped.
Some of the campers up at the meadow were riding horses. We took care not to spook them by coasting a quarter mile, or so, back down the hill.
The cutest little girl watched us leave...her solemn image is stored in flash memory and in my brain:

I'm fairly sure this image was along the "Gravel Dragon" or on the way to it:

Well, no more still images. But, I have a ton of video that may, or may not, be processed soon. I hope it is some good stuff. But, you never know.
I picked this up on the way home. Just a few miles from home, I got a rapid deflation at about 60 m.p.h. on Hwy. 72, just west of Rogersville. There's a few things Slime will not protect against:

A three inch, diagonally-inserted, deck screw is one of them:
I wonder how long it was in there???

I tried the compressor with the screw on the bottom but only got Slimed:

When I got the tube out, I found this:

Lazeebum to the rescue. I've told you before...the dude is rock solid. He came and got me with his trailer.
You got one in the bank, Randy. Thanks again.

Your presumption is not impossible....but is rather incorrect in this instance! :P

Yeah, so Bird Jesus spent 15 minutes telling us how great the Hooded Warbler is, and then asked if one of us would like to release the one he had just banded. Ken volunteered. The guy then showed Ken how to hold and then release the bird, but before he actually gave the bird to Ken, he said, "First, you have to tell me the bird's name." Immediately, I started thinking of female names and trying to decide on something cute and appropriate. Ken, with very little hesitation, said, "Daisy." The people under the tent erupted with laughter, and Bird Jesus, somewhat impatiently said, "No, it's a Hooded Warbler."
Bird Jesus is better with the birds than with the people, I said to myself, as I started walking away from the tent....
