Title: Future Key West/Saddle Sore 1000
Post by: Izzy3 on August 07, 2016, 07:52:25 PM
Anyone interested in putting one of these together?  I'm not an Iron Butt member but would like to hit the southern most point and may as well complete an iron butt event on the way to Key West.

I recommend finishing the Iron Butt before you get to Homestead.  From Key Largo to Key West is 100 miles of traffic, wildlife areas, 35mph speed limits, and uniformed revenuers collecting taxes and handing out awards.

I agree.   Last time I rode to Key West, we were stopped for hours in Key Largo due to a wreck up the rode.

All good info.  Finishing before the two lane would be important.  So one could ride to Mobile, buy gas and document the turn then run to Homestead?  Google maps shows 15.5 hours and 1100 miles of all slab from Athens.

That was my plan back in April, but we abandoned it because of coastal storms.  We just headed straight for the hotel in Key Largo, and ended up with only 820 miles.  Nobody was bummed though ... It was still worth the trip.

I missed the one last year. But the bike is better sorted now. And I've done a few full day 700 mile trips so the 1000 i think will just be boredom prevention.

820 miles was still a long day.

Any Idea when you might pull this off? And where would the starting point be? There is a long weekend coming up on labor day.... Just a thought and Yea you have my attention too!!

I will definitely not miss this one. Wanted to do the last one but had to make a choice. I've done many 600-800 mile solo rides in a day so 1000 mi shouldn't be a problem. I was sorta planning on doing a Key West ride in September but I'll hold out to see how this ride comes along.

I was thinking October myself.  A little further out from hurricane season.  I'm flexible though.

October will work for me. I just need 2 weeks notice so I can put in for vacation time.

So if we went in September, I don't think traveling around Labor Day would be advisable.  What about some time after Labor Day weekend?  An alternate route could be through Chattanooga to Knoxville over to Charlotte then down through Columbia to I-95S and end up for the night in Palm Beach (1099 miles) or we could push it to Ft. Lauderdale (1,152 miles) just to make sure.  That would be 17 hours in the saddle.  Then ride to Key West the next day after we recover.
The other option is south to Mobile then slab to Homestead (1,110 miles and 15.5 hours).  All these are Google Map estimates with Huntsville as the starting point.  I see you are from a couple hours south so we would need to plan a starting point for a suitable route.
Another option could be Birmingham to Jackson to I-12 to I-10 to Orlando for 1,119 miles in just under 16 hours.  I'm good with any starting point and I don't have any route preference.

I was thinking only spending one night there and highballing it back to Bama, no iron butt action, but putting some miles down.

Are you a Senna or a Cardo man?  I have both.

Any route is fine with me but I'd rather not do the Knoxville thing. I ride up there so often it's gotten kinda routine. Any of the other routes would be fine because it would be a little different scenery.

Are you dead set on joining the IBA and getting a certificate or are you just wanting to do a Key West ride. I'm fine either way, but if you really want the certificate I may as well join and get one too.

I'm not dead set on the Iron Butt certificate, but always wanted to try.  My main objective is to get to Key West.  I want to complete all four corners of the U.S.

Do the Iron Butt. If you've ever thought you wanted to, do it. It's very self gratifying. Something a lot of people talk about, but never do.

Good point.  I'm not getting any greener on the vine!   :o

Any hints for a first timer?

First question: What is the most miles you have ever ridden in one day and how did it work out for you?

Examples:
If you were dead tired after 500 miles in one day, I'd say pass on trying to do 1,000 in <24 hours.
If you were tired but not totally wasted after 750 miles in one day, well, I'd say you can do it.

800 miles and wanted more.  My bike is set up for all day comfort.

Srsly, you should have no problem.

When I did my official IB 1000<24  get-the-certificate ride, I did exactly zero to "prepare'.
I showed up around 4:30 am in Knoxville (spent the night with a friend nearby), left around 5:00 am and rode 1000 miles in about 22 hours. I think there was 8 of us and we all finished in <24 hours.

My bike was NOT setup for all day comfort. I froze my nads off the last 100 miles. But still, it was not all THAT bad.

My personal opinion (unique to me and other's will vary) plan a smart route, get a decent night's sleep before hand, show up and ride.

specific input:

a) It ain't a race. You can easily manage with avg 100 miles stints and 10-15 min stops. Plus a 1/2 hour break to eat and stretch your legs. Do the math.
b) If you have ridden 800 miles in a day then you are ahead of the game. Otherwise, think about each interval, not the whole thing. One step at a time.

and that's about it.

Seasoned riders already (should) know what works for them. Take that. Apply it.

Show up.
Ride.
HAVE FUN!
Succeed.

Oh yeah, it goes without saying, but I will: Choose your routes and times wisely. Example: Don't hit Atlanta at 5:00 on a Friday. Likely you will not be getting your IB certificate if you do.

I did mine this past November ... I think I hit Atlanta around 7:00PM on Thursday...

I've done three IBA rides.
A few suggestions:
1st and foremost, make sure have prepared to keep you butt comfortable. Seat, pad, whatever.
Start as early as you can.
Stay on the interstate all the way if possible.
Take all the food and water for the 1000+ part of your ride with you.
Stay in a group.
