Title: GPS Q&A
Post by: Fencejumper09 on December 01, 2017, 09:13:10 AM
I really like what Kyle is doing in the gps sticky and I don't want to muddy it up with too many questions. I thought it would be a good idea to have a Q&A thread. People can add questions here or create a new thread, we will see what the community wants!!

My question:

I am really interested in the Historic Places by county that Guidedawg has started. I found a Wikipedia page that lists all the historical places along with coordinates.
This is City of Birmingham

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Birmingham,_Alabama (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Birmingham,_Alabama)

In the top right corner you can map all of the coordinates at once with OSM or Google, when I do that i get a great map with all of the locations pinned. My issue is that I can't seem to find a way to save this to a file that I can quickly pull up on my phone in offline mode.

Here is the OSM link, it appears to be protected or something.

https://tools.wmflabs.org/osm4wiki/cgi-bin/wiki/wiki-osm.pl?project=en&article=National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Birmingham%2C_Alabama (https://tools.wmflabs.org/osm4wiki/cgi-bin/wiki/wiki-osm.pl?project=en&article=National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Birmingham%2C_Alabama)

This is really just in an effort to make it easier to find all of the historic locations at once instead of having to create a map, manually inputting each coordinate or address. Any help in finding a mobile friendly format would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

for the first website, hit this link
http://tripgang.com/kml2gpx/http%3A%2F%2Ftools.wmflabs.org%2Fkmlexport%3Farticle%3DNational_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Birmingham%252C_Alabama?gpx=1

on your phone and it should download the GPX.

then touch the recent downloads (if your phone handles them that way ) and it should prompt for which application you want to handle the downloaded gpx file.

if you want to use locus, select it, and scroll all the way to the top of the import dialogue, "add new folder" SACD you can name it "bham historic waypoints" or something similar.... locus should display it after the import. if not just open your waypoint database and select them
..

the second link, I cant figure out a way to get just a gpx file from it. they list them individually, but it doesn't look like they put much thought into allowing an easy way to export all at once. :-|

That's what I figured. I get an error when I click the link you provided above. Says it fails to retrieve and parse your URL
