Post by: klaviator on March 21, 2019, 12:13:45 PM
This ad keeps popping up on facebook.  Since I now have a smart phone that is actually smart ;D, I'm thinking of getting one of these.  I have zero experience with phone mounts so what do Ya'll think:

The absolute best phone mount is the perfect squeeze. It's designed to be used off-road. It's quick an easy to take your phone in and out. It's pricey though. There is a discount on adventure rider somewhere. I have one and love it. I spent more money than it cost on crap like the ram x grip and others trying to find something I liked. Buy once cry once. It's a lot cheaper than replacing an iPhone even if you have insurance!  :D

The Ram X-Grip is pretty much the standard, but there are newer systems out that I haven't tried yet. I don't know about real gnarly offroad, but I've never had a phone come out of an X-Grip. And that's without using the safety strap thingy they come with now.

For road use, the X-Grip is hard to beat. For offroad there may be better options, as already mentioned.

I have been using Rokform cases and mounts for years. I have them on the bike, in the car, at work, at my desk, etc. Smartly designed feature rich cases and mounts.

Not having any experience with phone mounts or using a phone or GPS on a bike I thought this would be a cheap way to try it out.  I have multiple bikes so I may end up with multiple phone mounts anyway(https://advrider.com/f/styles/advrider_smilies/ne_nau.gif)

Yep, I got the X mount ram thingy to. Works good on road and off...of course off-road is the toughest part cause I usually drop the big pig a time or two.  ;) I went with the Ram mount option because I have found them to be tough to break and well made. It comes with a strappy thingie that goes over the 4 corners of the phone that hold the phone securely. The X-grip it self has these little rubber knob thingies that have a little larger bell of rubber that also helps to keep the phone in place and protects the phone from getting scratched up by the metal arms. Hint; mine would also slip off sometimes when I removed the phone. I pulled all 4 off, then put a dab of superglue on the end of the metal arm then quickly slid the rubber thingy back on. I did all 4 of them, one at a time.  Ram stuff is expensive but I have never broke a ram mount. Got Ram mount mirrors too. I use my phone a lot in riding. Play music, Google Maps or Kurviger maps for direction, and I know when I get a call or text, it shows and tells me who it is. (If I think it might be important, I pull over to talk or text.)

Well, if you want a cheap mount to try. I have been using this in my truck. It comes ready to mount to bars. I drilled and tapped it to mount a ram ball on the back. It's $9 on eBay. It does great in the truck.I suspect it would be fine on a motorcycle, especially on road. If you're like me you'll be taking the phone in and out of the mount a lot. A couple three turns of the knob and the phone is out or tightened up. Works a lot like the perfect squeeze.
