Title: N. Alabama/TN street ride Sat 10-3-20
Post by: klaviator on September 28, 2020, 09:28:54 PM
This is tentative at this point so check back for changes.

Meet:  Mapco in Gurley

Time:  9:30  I plan on doing the ride brief at 9:30 and leaving after that.  Come early if you want to socialize.

We will ride 65 through Paint Rock Valley and up into Tennessee.  Stops in Huntland and Lynchburg with lunch at the Old Delina Country Stor.  Expect a lot of curvy roads.  I will stay away from the goat trails on this ride unless we get a group that really wants to do that.  We will finish the ride in Ardmore.

As always, ride at your own pace and we will regroup at turns.

Eat a good breakfast because most of the ride will be before lunch which will be a little late.

If the 9:30 meeting will be a problem let me know and I can adjust it.

Forecast says it will be cold in the morning and only warm into the high 60s so dress accordingly.

Groovy. Do your rides end at the starting point, and can you guesstimate end time?

Thanks
Michael

Sometimes they start and end at the same point and sometimes they don't.  In this case we will finish in Ardmore.  I'll guess between 3 and 5.  It's not uncommon for some people to break off and head home after lunch or some other point before the end.
Sometimes the group is really talkative and the breaks last a long time.   This makes it hard to estimate the end time of the ride.

I may need to go help out my Brother in Law who lives near Scottsboro so I may meet up with you all in Gurley and then ride either to 143 or Huntland before turning back or east to go up 16.

I'll most likely be on the Road Glide.

The stars may align for Sandy and I to actually make this ride. If we aren't at Mapco, we will fall in on the tail as you go by my house.

We will be one of the ones breaking off and going back through the Valley.

It will be great to see you again!  After lunch we will end up on 64.  That would be a good point for those who want to head back east to break off.  From there it is easy to pick up 231/431 south to Huntsville or back track to Huntland and then 65.

For anyone who may be interested in joining us further North, we should be at the Citgo at the corner of 122 and 64 around 10:30.

Lynchburg is having a music festival this weekend.  They are already putting up signs about expecting delays.  You may want to stay to the west of town a little.

I am planning to ride to Huntland with the group, then head east to 16 and back towards Scottsboro to help out my BIL.

Thanks for the info.  I was planning on taking a break on the square.  i think I'll pass south of Lynchburg and take a break at the gas station just off of 50 south of town.

Edit:  I checked the Lynchburg calender.  It shows the music festival on Friday.

It was a beauuuuutiful day for a ride.  It was a bit chilly in the morning but with wall to wall sunshine it eventually warmed up to nearly 70.

We had 8 riders on 7 bikes at the meeting place in Gurley.

We took a break in Huntland.

One rider peeled off after this break.  The rest of us headed to Lynchburg.

Lynchburg had a decent crowd but we had no problem finding a place to park on the square.

Bright enough for ya??

Nice ride, thanks for having me. But I definitely have the wrong bike for your group. I'd like to ride more with you guys again when I decide on and get something I can ride with a bit more spirit.

Thanks again,
Michael

There isn't really a "wrong" bike for our group.  You should see the variety of bikes we have had on some of our rides in the past.  I remember one ride where we had around 30 bikes.  We had everything from a couple of 150cc scooters to Harleys to sport bikes to dual sport bikes.

Some pics from that ride:

That's one of the things that makes this forum different.  We like all kinds of bikes.

I am not arguing your group acceptance at all. I surely felt welcome. I just don't like bringing up the rear...

Just about every ride I've been on that I wasn't leading, I've brought up the rear. lol  A 1000 pound touring bike with me on it, isn't going to be very fast. Add 2 up riding and I try to be more careful/slower.

I thought you did great. We had riders that were a lot slower on some rides and I've never heard anyone complain about waiting at the turns.

I get that.  While I ride faster than average on the street, in the dirt I tend to be one of the slower riders.  I'd rather be one of the fast guys but one of my favorite sayings is:  "A man has to know his limitations".

You may very well enjoy our rides more with a bike more suited for the roads but don't feel like you have to wait until you get another bike to come riding with us.

Even if I were on my Moto Guzzi, I wouldn't have ridden any faster.  I was running 15 over except for the real tight stuff, and that is my limit.  I don't want to know what speeds the fast group were running!  LOL!

I don't think I got over 60 or so except a couple times when passing cars.  I just didn't slow down that much for most of the curves.
