Once a year your filter should be checked. It's so easy to forget so set a month and do it every year.
Clean oil is not the only thing your bike needs. Clean air is the heart of every machine.  A bad filter can kill your bike starting with the valves that will get out of spec due to dirty air. Once they break and drop to the piston, we'll it's all over then.
I just got this bike and it's been full of surprises. Previous owner never checked and now it's my mess to deal with.

Don't be that guy.

 ???

I don't think I've even seen a dirt bike air box / filter that dirty before.

Whenever I wrote up a service order, I'd ask "When did you last have an air filter and a fuel filter replaced?". If the response was "I don't know", I let them know they'd be getting them on this visit.
There's no such thing as a "REAL RIDER!". If you have a motorcycle, you've done all you need to do.

Going to order a new filter now. Be right back.
