Title: Dual-Sportin the Free-State IX
Post by: Al Goodwin on January 23, 2018, 05:45:16 PM
Come one, come all dual-sport riders to the event of the year, so I've heard. ???

April 27-29.....activities like sausage fest on Friday night, Bacon fest Saturday morning, lunch at the world famous Chef Troy's Talk of the Town.....

Where....Brushy Lake recreation area/campground, in the beautiful Bankhead National Forrest.

Route will consist of true dual-sporting, limited blacktop, dirt roads, old road beds, maybe even some true trail riding if a group wants to hit the Flint Creek trail system.

Bikes must be tagged and insured, we'll have the "motor vehicle use map" printed out and with us to insure we stay legal.

So, make your calendars.....

We'll be doing some scouting ride prior to the event to find some new things, and visit some from years past.

I should be able to come to this! With my new car I can haul the dirt bike there. I'll add it to my calendar...

Oh yes ... I'm definitely in.
And I'm going to do my very best not to get drunk and/or impersonate Tina Turner this year...
Or at least not fall over the other guests while doing it...
Mary was not too proud that night.

I'm off work that Friday night so I should be able to make the whole event. :)

Awww. Now that's a shame. I got my guitar re-strung just for this event and an encore. I'm in. Street Only and camp duties.

We'll probably be setting up Thursday afternoon/evening.....

Then Friday is just a seat of the pants kind of day.  There's options, from a street ride, to the Flint Creek trails....

I've had questions about a street route on Saturday.....

Looking for a volunteer to lead a street route for some folks

I could help with the route.

Any takers??

Would you be up for a new dual sport rider joining in on the action? I don't have my bike yet but I should have a few hundred miles on it by late April.

This usually a good event for new dual sport riders. Mostly dirt and fireroads, with a few optional side trails that you don't have to go down, just wait for the others to come back. Plenty of supportive people to ride with. Most of the ride is big bike friendly, Al will most likely be two up on a KLR650 with Melony. I have ridden both my XT350 and my R100GS and enjoyed it.
You certainly won't be the first person to use this event as their first dual sport experience.

On our rides we normally have riders of varying abilities.  That's true for street as well as dual sport rides.  It's not an issue if you are slower than the other riders.  The fast riders ride fast and wait for the slower riders at intersections.  Also, some of us "veterans" aren't exactly fast.   This event is always a blast, not only the riding but also the camping and hanging around the campfire.

You don't want to miss this!

That is awesome to hear that being new isn't a problem. I need to check some dates with the wife and Scout Troop and make sure I can make the event. Sounds like a lot of fun. Will the group camp Friday night and Saturday night or stay in local hotels? I'm always up for camping.

Camping both nights. You don't have to attend the whole weekend. Some camp 1 night and ride. I can only make the Saturday ride and will miss a lot of the fun stuff.

We both ride DRZ400S' man.  You are welcome to join.   Nothing too hairy on Friday, just ride backroads and see crap along the way I suspect.  Saving energy and bikes for the good stuff on Sat and Sun.  I'll post up details when we get closer.

Are you thinking dirt or paved roads? I try to keep the WR off road when I can it'll do paved roads just fine, I just prefer dirt.

Not sure, my bud who lives on that side of the Ham is lead.  I suspect we will see backroads and some gravel for items of interest.  No single track gnarly.  Safety in numbers so think about it.  I'll post up a separate thread the week of to lock location and time of meet up.

BTW, you are welcome to join any ride.  Glad to have you on board!!

@Windy Saturday make sure to get to the campsite early enough for breakfast!! The ride will start there and Allen will lead all through Bankhead!

This is one of the best Dual Sport rides around and am doing all I can to attend!
Title: Re: Dual-Sportin the Free-State IX
Post by: springer on April 12, 2018, 06:36:30 PM
Okay, now I am a mostly likely to attend. Gymkhana will be happening to but I hardly ever drop my bike at Gymkhana, not so when I am on the dirt.  ;) It happens pretty regularly,  ;) and y'all know how much I like to "drop it while its hot"!  :D

Another huge plus is there should be plenty of folks there to help me pick it up!  ;D

And yet another plus is I have been practicing setting up my hammock! I broke the 4 hour mark yesterday! Yep, I can have it fully hung and red eye to sleep in 4 hours!! Speedy LeHammock I is!  :D

I got this ruff woods living thing down!

One question though...does Domino's deliver there?

:D

Friday night is the Sausagefest! Bring some sausage to throw on the grill. Saturday night typically is bring your own dinner. If you are planning to ride in, you can probably send a cager some cash for their cooler space and food! Brushy Lake is not convenient to anything so plan accordingly (alcohol)!

Actually, my plan is to trailer my klx up Friday afternoon, hopefully leaving from downtown Birmingham 1ish to 2ish. Lynn will ride her R80ST up when she gets off work 4ish.

If anyone wants me to haul anything up there, food, beer(no guarantees it will get there :D), camping gear with in reason, we can arrange something as we get closer.

What's everyone's thoughts on making this a 2-group ride?  One group to be dropped off at the Flint Creek trail system, and the rest to do a ride down to, and across, and old bridge....this would be before lunch, and after the ride down to the river.  Then we could all meet up for lunch....

How many would want to ride Flint Creek?  It's an additional $3, I think, so bring some cash if you're wanting to ride it.  If no any of you haven't ridden not, it's an ATV, or Ural sidecar rig, width, ain't that right John Alderman?...17 miles or so...some rocky sections, but nothing to very difficult.  I'd say it's even "big bike friendly" for the experienced rider.  Melony and I will not be riding it 2-up on the Tenere....

Give me your thought on 2 groups splitting up mid-morning.

I dunno, I wanna see all the good stuff and not miss a thing. I'll bring the big bike and slide around if it leans towards gravel travel, and bring the little bike if it leans towards dirty biking.

Hot showers and flush toilets in the "day use" area, short walk from campground.  Campground has a vault toilet.  No power at sites, water spigot in campground.

Looking like 20 or so????

We can have a group of faster guys .....if someone is willing to lead the group.  I'll have a printout of the route if y'all have roll-charts you could cut the printouts and use them.  I'll print it in size to fit chart holders......

Reckon 10 pounds of bacon is enough??

I can bring 20 if needed.

And we have 5 dozen Cracker Barrel biscuits ordered up for breakfast Saturday morning.

S&S grocery, in Holly Pond, Al. has Conecuh sausage $4/pack, normally around $5..... we'll have other smoked sausage for Friday nights sausage fest also.

Y'all bring whatever you want to throw on the grill Friday night.

I'll be there on Friday afternoon.  Bringing a friend, another old & slow guy but not as old and slo as me ;D

I rode Flint creek last fall at the nowhere to be ride on my KLR.  It was pretty dry then.  It will be real wet this weekend so I'll pass on Flint Creek this time.

Roll chart holder?  I have one of those.....somewhere.

I'll be truckin in and will bring a cooler.  Anything you need me to bring?  I was thinking some potato salad to go with the sausage.

Brad H and I will be doing a few hours of riding on Friday stating in warrior in route to camp night one.  Still locking deal but I'll assume we will do lunch at jacks or something mid day then KSU and roll for some easy fun to start the weekend.  See you suckers at sausage fest.  Pm me if you want in on the Fridah deal. It's Brad's turf so he is leading since I'm from the south side of the Ham.

We can have a group of faster guys .....if someone is willing to lead the group.  I'll have a printout of the route if y'all have roll-charts you could cut the printouts and use them.  I'll print it in size to fit chart holders......
I count approximately 28 for Saturday at least. We'll bring firewood.

I keep seeing "install knobbies" and "trailer klxyz (dirt-bias bike) and chart holder. Can my. Wee-strom do this with a 70/30 tire?

it's just really fun to take a tiny bike on DS rides and smoke through the forest. the vstrom/BMW guys will have fun on their bikes, no biggie.

I'm bringing either a drz with street tires or a kdx with knobbies, depends on the rain. both are tagged.

hopefully it rained real good Thursday or Friday, so we won't have any dust to deal with this weekend.  :)
Title: Re: Dual-Sportin the Free-State IX
Post by: klaviator on April 25, 2018, 03:40:01 PM
Most of this ride is easy dirt/gravel roads and paved roads.  There are a couple of dead end trails that are rutted and muddy and will be a handfull on a big bike without knobbies if they are wet.  They are optional.  You can wait for everyone to go down and back.  Most likely you will not be alone.  It's supposed to rain Thursday and be dry fri-sun.  This should keep the dust down.

Then there is the Flint Creek trail.  Someone did it on a V strom last fall but I wouldn't.  I did it on my KLR and found it pretty challenging.  I'm neither a noob or an expert off road.  Some people may ride this trail this weekend but I won't be one of them.

Keep in mind that we have had people do this ride two up on big bikes.

I got your chart holder, the face is missing so if it rains the paper is going to break. It needs a metal screw type hose clamp to hold it to the bars, seem to have lost that too. It does have the route from the last time I rode LBL.

Thinking riding out about 1pm-3pm ish Friday morning...getting there some time well before dark. If not leave out early...as in around 5 am Saturday morning.

We got some knobbies slapped on Beck's 650 last night. We also have a good sized load of firewood loaded up in the truck already. Be nice not to have to be scrounging in the woods for sticks to burn. We'll be that way this evening. We still have to hook up the trailer, load the bikes, and get some camping gear together.

woohoo what a perfect weekend of socializing, riding, laughing and making fun of Beck behind his back !

huge thank you to our tireless hosts, the Goodwins, and all of you folks that showed up to blowup the party !

I missed the sausage festival, but reaped the benefits of it, and also the infamous twenty pounds of bacon.

met several new folks , blasted Eric bottomlee with gravel (I thought Beck was behind me) and ripped around the trails following a drz and an xr650 with a windshield. lots of modest fellas, forgiving ladies, and good vibes all weekend long.

again, thank you Goodwins, for providing us with a wonderful atmosphere. I saw what you did for your neighbors, that's very kind of you.

fyi- klr's always win the gravity races, get over it you light weights on your kdx's and tw's ! sad face !

Another fantastic event!!!  Thanks Al and Melony for being such great hosts.

Al and Melony cookin up some of that 10 pounds of bacon Saturday morning:

I had a great time.  I enjoyed the ride but I really enjoyed spending some time with old friends as well as making some new ones.  For me, it's the people that make this event so special.  There are better places to go out and ride but you won't find better folks to hang out with anywhere.

I took a bazillion pics but I won't try to post them all.  I'll post a few now and more tomorrow.

Huge thanks to Al and Melony for organizing such a fun weekend for riding, food and friendship!

I don't know how you guys do all the work and ride too, but as always , ya done good.

It was great meeting new friends and getting back up to speed with old friends. Events like this are what makes motorcycling special, and especially "Motorcycle Alabama".

When I find my camera, I'll post up some of my photos, although there probably aren't many 'cause I was too busy having fun.

After the trails to the river and dropping off some of the group at the Flint Creek Trails we rode mostly pavement to "the bridge".  I thought the bridge and road it was on was pretty cool.  Melony seemed to enjoy it too:

I lost my motorcycle camera on a ride a couple of months ago and haven't gotten a new one, so I don't have any ride pics, that was me dragging that telephoto DSLR around, there are some people pics, I had to stand at the outhouse to even get a head in the frame, since you can't even tell this was m/c event from these pics, I'm just going to post a link for the curious.

I bought this as a second camera to film with along my GoPro Hero 3 Black. It is a YI Lite Action Camera. You can follow the link to see it on Amazon;

Or watch this video on it;

I haven't used it YET. Was going to on the Free State ride but you know, a mule got in the way. I may just turn it on and do a little walk around with it tomorrow.

It really was a great weekend to say the least. I would do it again in a heartbeat and I look forward to riding and hanging out with all of you guys in the future.

Big thanks to the Goodwins for being such great hosts. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180504/b55cd56e68374dea90fb3b3b54116277.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180504/14a87f75338fae50bf6f2b2687552754.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180504/6a4e50b4871d6825518fc7c1fe24acb0.jpg)

Thanks Allen and Melony for putting together a spectacular event. No pictures but I'll probably steal a few of these that are posted. The food, the friends, the weather, all were excellent. If you've never been on a Free State Ride with the Goodwin's, you have missed out.
